Hi guys,

I am currently trying to find out what sports I can do which won't cause more problems for my knee without much success.

Here's a bit about my knee problem:

I had keyhole surgery/arthroscopy the other week to clear out the mess and make it a bit better but after seeing the consulatnt yesterday he said basically that the back of my kneecap is totally worn, there is no enamel there and he showed me the pics which looked rough. He said I have the kneecap of a 40-50 year old(I'm 27), and he can't understand how its got so bad. He said I might have Marfan Syndrome, and there is servere arthritis there(even though it doesn't hurt much) and if it starts to hurt a lot in the future I might need a new kneecap.

When I was young I was told it was Osgood Schlatter's, but I was wrongly diagnosed. Before the op I was lookin forward to starting a bit of running but I don't know if I should now, and I don't know what else I could do. I'm looking to do something where I can set myself targets and improve, maybe tennis, golf, exercise bike or running. Would any of these be any good? I don't like swimming or rugby.

Any suggestions would be really good. Will leave rep for all help of course!

I forgot to be honest. I had loads of things to ask when I saw him again yesterday and he ended up having to syringe some of the fluid from the knee while I was there so I wasn't feeling too great some of the time while I was with him. Will see the physio on Thurs so I'll see what he says, and will go to the doc on Friday for more advice. I'm just impatient! :-D

When I had a knee injury (it was not as serious as yours) I found that swimming was the only thing that didn't give it any pain.

I did have some discomfort when mountain biking. But, my injury was nothing like yours....it was more of a muscular thing.

I piled on the pounds after dislocating my knee playing football at school
was out about 3 times after that in 3 years
doctors didnt do sh1t and just told me to lose weight I gave up in the end
now iam 32 and a bit lardy boy with two knee caps

only thing that was good is swimming anything impact even cycling leaves me in pain after
how did you get a consultant only person that has ever looked at mine is the doctor
guess I should complain more

i was gonna say Mountain biking is most likely going to to be bad as you do get load running through the knee.
You need low impact sports.

Swimming (even though you sat you dont like it) is going to be best during rehab
Standard cycling in stints might be good.
Most of the stuff is going to be like yoga and aerobics, mainly gym based stuff.
Your best bet from what you have said so far is going to be Golf i would have thought

im afraid more than likely most team sports are going to be out.

Table tennis. I play 3 times a week and im in various leagues in norfolk. You may not think its a hard sport but trust me its a minute to learn lifetime to master. Its one of the only sports where experience can beat young ripe talent.

Two knee caps! Doctor asked me to get xray'd and consultant took over from there.

You get torsion forces going through the knee, When you play as much golf as that man does, combined with the ridiculous force he puts onto the ball through technique.

As said table tennis is good too!

Cycling is best mate as your not putting all your body weight down but your still exercising, I was advised to do this as part of my physiotherapy.

Hi, Sorry to hear your knee is so bad. i damaged my knee badly about six years ago. ended up having reconstruction, bone grafts etc. I can do very little mysef sadly,
I would try and stick with activities that avoid rotation, so if swimming avoid breast stroke, walking on a treadmill should be ok. Cycling or rowing. A relative of mine used to play pro football, and now following an injury can only row cycle etc.Good luck, hope you get a good physio to get you started.

Is it your right or left knee?

The stress on the knee joint when striking a golf ball is tremendous.

Sounds stupid but without a club or ball etc just try the stance and pretend to take a golf shot but quite slowly.
You will feel and see the movement and impact the left knee (if right handed) takes.

Then imagine hitting your driver off the first tee, having to carry water over 250yds, the force you will put into it to pull off the shot is huge and will definately not be beneficial for you.

Personally i would recommend swimming.

Thanks for that. Its the right knee and I'm right handed. So I'm guessing the pressure will go on the left knee from the swing?

Yes, but the back swing especially and general follow through just isn't good for your right knee either.

Do whatever you feel comfortable doing.

I had a problem with my knee which was eventually fixed but the physio said because of the nature of the injury I wouldn't be able to run/play sport again - I just had to 'take it easy'.

Since then I ran half marathons regularly (at least one per month) for 20 years, have done 22 years in the Army, played all sorts of sports, taken part in loads of adventurous activities & I'm still going strong!

The trick is to try something, & your knee will tell you whether or not it's happy for you to continue. I'm not saying you'll be able to do everything you want, but you won't know until you try.
