Long story short, I tried to get for Watford v Norwich tickets (played 12th April, 2011). I tried booking online and they said "cannot buy them at this time". I tried phoning in and it started listing "indices" for various countries and then charged me £6 for the call. I chanced it and went to the stadium to buy the tickets and they said I had to be on the "database" in order to buy tickets.

What did I do wrong, and what do I have to do to buy football tickets??? I'm new to this, please advise. Thanks.

Here's the long version:

My friends came to the UK for a week, and they wanted to see a football match as discussed here.

They decided they wanted to chance it at Chelsea, but failed (obviously). So, I registered on Sunday 10th April to try and get the Watford Tickets. It said I "couldn't buy them at this time". I tried again Monday morning with the same problem.

So, I phoned them during their opening times, and it started listing "indices" for various countries. I compared the number again, and the phone number matched that to their website (08448561881). Then it took £6 for the pointless call.

We decided to chance it and go to Watford stadium and buy tickets when we got there. We queued up and then were told we couldn't buy tickets because we weren't on their "database".
I asked what I would have to do to be on their "database" and she told me that I had to "buy tickets last year, for this year"....??? There were obviously seats for sale, they just didn't want to sell them to me because I wasn't on a stupid database!

Is it me, or is this a stupid way of selling their tickets? There must be a reason behind it (ie. not letting opposing teams buy up all their tickets..?)

Can someone please let me know what I did wrong?
Thanks!

As a Norwich fan It was a very important game for us and as usual we sold out are away allocation. So some Norwich fans probably tried to get tickets in the home end as their were plenty of free seats in the home end. Thus watford only sold them to people to who were are on their database to avoid selling to any Norwich fans.

Most teams will do this to avoid away fans in the home end. Anyway you missed a cracking match.

You're best bet would of been going to the Watford box office a week or so before the get your tickets in person and explained your situation.

Yes, I thought that was the reason why they didn't sell it to me. I don't live anywhere near Watford. I went down to London to meet up with friends and stayed there for a week. That's why I tried to buy them in advance via phone or the net. I obviously did something wrong. But next time I'll try to buy with at least a month in advanced. Thanks for the info.
