Ok so looking to purchase a new Apple laptop before christmas as my current one is coming unto 3 years old, peoples opinions on which would be better in the long run please....since getting the ipad only thing the laptop is used for is torrent downloading(most nights) and a bit of light photo and video editing

Current laptop is a 15" 2.4 c2d macbook pro with 4gb ram

Budget of about £1500

Options....

15" unibody i5 with a SSD. Comes to about £1500

or

13" new macbook air with the highest ram they fit and the 256 ssd ,comes to about £1300ish

Not really bothered about the 13" pros but like the look of the new airs but worried that they will be a bit outdated in 3 years time as the spec is a bit lower than the mbp's

Opinions?

Please no apple v windows nonsense or suchlike...its my money and I only but apple stuff because i like it.

Thanks in advance

MacAirs are for girls. Seriously, the only people I know with them are ladies. All the men have Macbook pros, no less than 15" either!!!

Just get a Windows 7 Laptop, Much better value and most software actually works on Windows.

Thanks for the advice and not reading the op, but i would sooner urinate on my godson whilst he is opening his present on xmas day than do what you suggested.

Only thing it's used for is torrents and light photo editing? So why get a new one?

If you have to blow money needlessly go for the first one, the larger screen is far more useful although that i5 is never going to be pushed, so it's a waste of cash.

Oh here we go, the mac and pc argument begins.

id steer away from the air too, if its only going to be used for torrents etc why not consider an imac rather than a laptop, or wait a bit longer, i just supect that apple are going to release something like the ibook but with more oomph.

Ive been thinking the same, my ibook gave up the ghost a few month ago, i have a newish imac which i now use for light work, mainly as something i can use adobe on. I am going to pick up an ipad soon...i keep putting it off keep wondering if the second one will be more substantial.

I sort of lost, imac is too regimented and not flexible but is big and is a stable workhorse and looks great
Ipad pretty, and great for everyday playing about
I used to use laptop when i needed to work with the kids around or on a night in bed...miss it, but cant bring myself to pay so much for a item i suspect will be obsolite in 3/4 years

It does feel like i need something in the middle of the imac and ipad but the options are not quite answering.

Given your choice i suggest that you go with the option which will have higher resale, give it a year and if its not working for you sell it and you will not have lost too much.
Also if you can manage to get on to any uni campass network any building/computer at all, it will automatically take you to the student store making it a lot cheaper plus comes with 3 years warrenty...may be worth racking your brains if you know any students
