Hey guys need some help.

I have a HP desktop

I am looking to upgrade the processor, but i'm thinking the manufacturer's specs is a bit outdated.

Basically what intel core 2 duo processors can i upgrade to? I am looking at E7300, E7400, or E7500. Or i am only restricted to E6X00 as per HP specs (see link).

What you're really looking for is a BIOS update to include the range of processors you're after. I downloaded the latest one and there's nothing in the readme file to indicate addition of other processor types. Since there's no historical change log either (tsk tsk HP), I can't even see if it's been added from an earlier release.

I would say unless HP tell you it'll work, assume it won't.
i recon you should be able to run a E6600, and looking at this chart:,818.html you are gonna be running about as fast as that board can manage. its either that or try and pickup a cheap P35 based board, which would allow you to run some of the quad's.
My guess is you are restricted to the 65nm architcture.

Newer CPUs like the E7300 use 45nm architecture.

See the list below from Intel, I think you can run any E6xxx CPU that has 65nm in the Architecture column, maybe up to the E6850.
thanks. think i'll wait for the E6700 to get a bit cheaper before upgrading.
actually i just found something:

this other desktop (a more recent launch) from HP has the same motherboard ASUS P5BW-LA as mine:
newer desktop

however the newer desktop claims it supports:
Supports the following processors:
Intel Core 2 Quad (Kentsfield core) Q6xx0 with Quad Core technology up to Q6600 (2.4 GHz, B-3 step, 105W)
Core 2 Duo E6x00 with Dual Core technology (Conroe core) up to E6700
Core 2 Duo E4x00 series with Dual Core technology (Conroe core)

while mine supports:
Supports the following processors:
Intel Core Duo E6x00 with Dual Core technology (Conroe core)
Pentium D 9x0 series Dual Core (Presler)
Pentium D 8xx series (Smithfield)
Pentium 4 6x1 series (Cedar Mill core)
Pentium 4 6xx (Prescott core)
Pentium 4 5xx (Prescott core)
Pentium 4 LGA-775 HT (Prescott core)

any ideas why it would be different?? I am thinking hp has not updated that motherboard specs...
