for as long as i can remember some grey men in grey suits have been bickering on & on about a 3rd runway and in the meantime other cities have just got on with it & seem to have left London behind in terms of a modern efficient transport hub.

my own view is it's in the wrong place anyway, the road network around there can barely cope on a normal day nevermind when a minor incident occurs.

Darkie says...

new runway at Gatwick & Manchester.

put more of the short hauls in & out at City.

divert most of the freight into Stansted, Luton, Brum, EastMidlands etc.

overall reducing the capacity at Heathrow gradually so it's a bit less crazy.

or just build Boris Island with 6 runways on the Thames :-)

Your thread title just isn't getting the party started, Darkie. Can I suggest 'Your favourite 3000m stretch of concrete' may appeal more to your fan base. :)

Manchester is super busy nowadays they defo need to do something up there asap, so many inbounds have to do a scenic tour of the peak district because they just can't get into the stack

At this point It would be nice if they just got on with it. No solution is ideal and bulldozing homes is horrendous but this country needs to show it's still outward looking and to use a meaningless phrase 'open for business'.

I wish the ideas were more ambitious but that's simply not modern Britain so Heathrow expansion is probably the best solution.

Instead of grey men bickering you are encouraging people in Misc to bicker too the same stuff over again for years.

Maybe I spoke too soon. Dave', HEAWD and Judge Splender - one hell of a party. Shame I have to bail before they lose their inhibitions, and possibly their clothes. oO

At this point I suspect Miles will gain a huge interest in hearing about enlargements

They should be adding runways to Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and relocate Leeds/Bradford so they can have a proper length runway also building in connecting rail lines from major cities, ideally like the Skytrain they have in Bangkok.

Give us the transport hubs for the next century.

6 runways but just one giant terminal...amazing place
#14
Why not build it at Calais where the jungle was?
#15
Its Heathrow end of discussion Bojo and Justine Greening will be allowed to put a small protest for their constituents but it will go ahead

I'm on a Google mission now to find one that's exactly 3000m...look what you've made me do X)

already a port or a fight club depending on the day

Very short sighted.

What happens in 30 years when yet another runway is needed? Better to build a new airport somewhere that can accommodate at least 6 runways.

Schiphol is the only airport in the world situated below sea level.

Today's slightly interesting fact! :D

Having had the misfortune on a few occasions of having to spend more time getting from different terminals to terminal 5 _and it takin floater than my connecting flight back home I won't travel through Heathrow again. Management don't have a clue what's going on, who ever designed it needs to be sacked, hot summer day and people were nearly fainting waiting for a bus. Awful staff either only interested on playing with their phone and talking to each other or barking instructions st passengers who asked for advice. Welcome to the UK.

Third runway approved, now we wait for objections and demonstrations until it's actually completed. Would be nice if we could move past this phase and actually get on with it. Hopefully there's a strong British economy for it to service in a decade's time.

Interesting to see the principled stance Boris puts on. Obviously he won't compromise his ambitions by leaving the cabinet so it'll be some token speeches followed by doing absolutely nuttin (in the words of Conor McGregor).

Zac Goldsmith has resigned over this
The Libs Dems may well fancy their chances of regaining the seat
edit:oh I see he is going to stand as an independent and the tories are not going to oppose him
