Well sort of - animal rennet.

Pretty poor if you're a vegetarian and like chocolate! Really odd decision for Masterfoods to have made...

Talk about OTT headline topic. You would make a good journalist. :)

It pulls in the readers! ;-)

stupidity by the company
why switch a readily available vege rennet for a meat based one?
3 million veggies in the UK.... thats a potential 3 million customers down the pan, then theres more, in the Jewish/Muslim religions - meat is required to be kosher/halal
so thats a couple of million more gone there.
#5
Yep, not just vegetarians affected!

I thought this quote was so ill-informed too:

"If the customer is an extremely strict vegetarian, then we are sorry the products are no longer suitable, but a less strict vegetarian should enjoy our chocolate," said Paul Goalby, corporate affairs manager for Masterfoods.

A "less strict vegetarian" = "not a vegetarian in the first place". It's like those people who say "I'm vegetarian but I still eat fish." You're not veggie then!

(For the record, I'm not a vegetarian!)

Well, I am but not a huge chocolate eater - and the Mars announcement will be enough for them to lose me as a customer:-(

Seems a very silly decision by them - why break it if it isn't broken!!!
#7
It's put me off somewhat too! I'm sure rennet is in other things I eat and I just don't realise, but knowing my lovely Snickers has calf stomach in it now... :o

so apparently if your after vege mars bars, get everything before the oct best before date.
banned#10
Makes it worse, that it would have been possible to buy one without knowing it was unsuitable for you to eat.

Personally, vegetarians shouldn't be so fussy. Cows would have never lived if we didn't eat them.
#11
Ah well - who cares !! I'll still be able to enjoy a nice Mars bar :D

what a load of crap rennet is no longer made from animal guts I know I'm a cheesemaker its all man made now.
#15
Riiiiight, so major international food manufacturer Masterfoods don't know where their rennet is coming from?

Because of the limited availability of proper stomachs for rennet production, cheesemakers have always looked for other ways to coagulate the milk. Artificial coagulants are a useful alternative, especially for cheap or lower-quality cheeses.
#16
rennet is used to make cheese in like almost all factories (done that in School) its calf stomach acid or something!)
#17
Exactly. Masterfoods might be pretty stupid to have done this, but they're not SO thick that they'd have said there was animal rennet in the products if there wasn't!
#18
Oh Knoes! BSE infected chocolate!
#19
hopefully it will cost them a couple of billion LOL.
#20
I won't be buying their products until they switch back to the previous recipe. I'm not a veggie, but I don't see the point in their changing the recipe for any other reason than cost saving. If that is the case, then the customer obviously comes second to their stock market position.
In fact, I may just boycott Masterfoods altogether.

I'm just a normal veggie who (used) to enjoy a Twix sometimes. Hopefully this will be like the Cherry Coke fiasco and they will be forced to go back to the old recipe.

mars chocolate has gone way downhill since i was a kid, I cant eat it anymore
#30
I can't stand mars ever since I eat 12 one after another in a bet when I was about 6 won a tenner however.
#31
I'm annoyed they are doing it aswell, How do they not make enough profit?
#32
Oh Gawd!! They're even using meat in Whiskas!!

Seriously though, it only really affects vegans... after all, you're eating the stuff every time you have cheese!!

I can't eat Cadbury's chocolate fingers with any sense of satisfaction since I ate a truckload for charity 15 years ago.

Only some cheeses are suitable for vegetarians and made with veggie renet (whey).

I'm the sort of veggie that chooses the suitable cheeses when in the Supermarket but I don't treat it as the end of the world if I have cheese from an unknown source like a pizza.

It will be the same with Mars etc bars - I will avoid them if I am buying from now on.
#35
i wonder if they are going to remove hydrogenated vegatable oil from the twix's lol.

Whata great day for mars bars.

It doesn't affect vegans as they wouldn't be eating mars bars anyway.

That letter in post 9 was dated 23rd April! Took 2 weeks for the beeb to catch on and its is todays Daily Mail
Certain they'll change it back soon and add a penny to the price like they've been doing all this time.
