ALL SORTED

ok i bought a pc from currys about 6 months ago, it came with windows vista basic loaded.
i recently upgraded the ram and since then im getting a message to activate my windows, i try re-entering the serial thats on the side of my base unit and it says its invalid.

so i think they have sold me a comp with an oem version but didnt state thats what it was, as with oem windows its invalid once somthing is upgraded.

i went into a store 2day to ask about it only to be told by some spotty little brat to search on google for a cracked serial number which i was very unhappy with.

so i dont know what to do next, do i go in and kick off or ask for a full version of vista.

any advice would be very helpfull

for one, go and kick off at that little brat for being such a turd.

two, i would explain your plight to the "smartest" looking clerk and see what they say. It sounds like a simple thing to resolve if you have reciepts.
#2
yeah i have reciepts and everything, only thing is i dont want to have to install a fresh copy as it will mean backing up a lot of stuff and losing some things.

the kid also tried selling me a copy too for £120 but i shoouldnt have to be doing that.

its funny as ive never heard of a store like currys selling a pc with an oem windows on it, or if they did it should at least be stated

i believe all currys/dixons/pc world PCs are OEM. You'll be hard pressed to find one that isn't.

What would happen if you took out the ram? because as you say, its been fine for 6 months?

It would have asked you for a number before that if it wasn't genuine. like, 30 days or something.
#4
wont make any difference if i take the ram out as its made the change now.

thing is ive had a pc from them in the past, and they offer to upgrade pc's for a small price.

so if they upgrade a computer they have sold with an oem windows how do they get past the activation thing or do they put a new serial number in.

see i cant afford a new copy or a new serial number which microsoft are trying to charge me £62 for
#5
why are you worried about the price when you have made a case that it isn't your fault?

you're under a year, so get down to currys tomorrow and tell them to sort it out.

ok will do. wont be able to get there till wednesday but will go down with reciept and demand for it to be sorted. thanks for the advice was just a bit unsure on what to do. gona ask for the manager when i go in as well so i dont get told to get an illegal serial number lol
#7
Thats always best. So if they tell you something wrong, you only have head office to go to then!

good luck!

If you just want to get your computer working, you could always just try ringing the microsofts windows activation number and explaining to them that you have just ugraded the RAM and your number is no longer working.

I can't remember whether the option to phone comes up during the activation process, but if it doesn't, disconnect you network cable, reboot and the next time there should be an option to activate by other means or something like that.

The CoA on the side of your PC which has the serial number should tell you which version of Windows it's for as well as the manufacturer of the PC for any of the larger companies. This should say Vista Basic, if it does when you're trying to activate do it over the phone because when it doesn't work you'll be put through to a rep. There's various limitations on the number of automated activations after which you have to activate over the phone, MS tend to cautious with OEM licenses as they want to make sure the license is being used properly.

With regards to OEM license, pretty much every single PC sold by Currys or PC World and in fact any prebuilt Windows PC will come with an OEM license - that's exactly what an OEM license is for.

I was going to suggest that. They are actually pretty ok - providing you can give them the SN. The PC would have an OEM version - most PCs do. Thats not a problem.

The OP certainly needs to go back to the shop and get them to sort it though. Tell them if they dont, you will contact Trading standards for (a) selling unlicensed goods (does the PC not have a sticker with the SN on it?) (b) staff informing you to put a counterfeit SN in it and (c) trying to sell you a copy of software you have already bought from them.

Just ask for the manager not a snotty kid that doesnt know his bum from his elbow!

They probably will be able to tell you the SN - but without a sticker they are unlikely to do anything!

He he. Indeed.

Think your solution will be with the shop though on this one unless you have the certification sticker on the PC.

lol im still about. yeah ive got the sticker on the base unit so that shouldnt be a problem thx

I think if I was told that by a member of staff i would have the manager out and also be on the phone to the head office about it
#15
you have to reactivate even on xp after upgrade its nothing new, even when i just update my graphic card drivers i sometimes have to.
#16
yeah but when its saying my serial number is invalid its kinda hard. gonna ring microsoft 2moro anyway and see how that goes
#17
guys just wanna say thx for all the help i was being a complete noob i rang the microsoft line and went thru all the steps, typed in the code it gave me and its all back activated now.

i feel so embarresed now lol i just panicked when i was getting told i needed to activate, i thought it was the end of my windows lol
#18
Glad you're all sorted, the system isn't very clear at all so it's completely understandable that you were concerned there were problems with your serial key. Believe me, I've had plenty of 'fun' with activation issues...does my head in at times and I'm a legal user! It's supposed to be difficult for the pirates..sigh.

Great to hear. No need to be embarrassed, as John says, it's totally understandable. :) It's a silly system that makes it hard for the legit users, whereas the pirates bypass it with ease.

Ive had a similar experience also... with a dodgy copy installation - but had a valid and Certificate. When I used it to go legit, it eventually locked me out. A call to M$ sorted it.
