The 5 Year Guarantees/Warranties vary in that you either have the store based one's like Marks & Spencer and John Lewis or third party companies like Domestic & General.

They all cover virtually the same thing but I would rather go with one of the longstanding store warranties as these have been around for years and in many circumstances they will go out of their way to make sure their customers are looked after. Third party warranties can be a bid dodgy as if the retailer that sold the warranty goes bust, their have been instances that warranties haven't been honored as the paperwork has never been passed onto the warranty companies leaving the customer in the deep end.

With store based warranties I have used I have found that the turnaround is quite quick (depending on the product) as you can take the item in-store and any problems dealt with on the spot. This isn't quite the case with third party warranties as they normally have to be returned or for a service engineer to come and check the item.

The only thing that is a bit up in the air is how much you will get if your set is deemed to be faulty after say 4 years. It is worth getting this information before you buy a set as this can vary considerably and mean that you may only receive something like 20% of the cost back to get a replacement with certain warranties where as others will give you a 'like for like' replacement.

If I were you I'd head over to [url]www.avforums.com[/url] and check out what experiences people have had as they do differ for both types. Just remember though that a lot of companies are going bust at the moment so don't accept a warranty from a company you've not heard of, make sure you get a copy of your warranty and whatever you do, pay for the set by credit card.:thumbsup:

does anyone have any experience of claming in like a year 2 or 3, after the manaufacturer warranty is done?

just i wonder how the companies can offer such long warranties on these products.

it seems its quite a recent thing thats started so I don't know if anyone has had a TV long enough to claim from the companies that offer them.

Because companies like John Lewis actually care about their customers on a long term basis, unlike the likes of Currys Dixons etc. who are just after a fast buck.:x

I keep reading that they are a waste of money unless they really are FREE (i.e Tv is still cheaper than anywhere else regardless of warranty length). This is because Tvs should have a reasonable life expectancy of 5+ years anyway so would be covered for repair under the sale of goods act.

Anyone claimed under this and been un/successful?

from talking to some people on some consumer forums heres what I get about these free warranties:

If your tv breaks down after 5 years and can't be repaired then your 5 years will be taken in to account. You will be made an offer to cover your use of the product. You will have used 5/6ths of the expected life (under the sale of goods act) so you will have a claim for the 1/6th you did not use. If your tv cost £1000 it will be broken down to £166.66 a year. That is all legally they have to offer you. With an extended warranty that you pay extra for if it breaks and can not be repaired then it will be replaced in full at any time during that 5 years.

if it CAN be repaired, then they will take it to a subcontracted TV repair firm and get a quote for the price of the repair inc all labour, delivery and VAT charges and if its price is under the original price paid for the TV, the repair will be done.
if its more, they will ask you to cough up the difference.

Of course you will have paid more than the original value of most products to actually buy one of these " paid " for warranties, especially a 5 year one.:whistling:

With John Lewis you get a free 5 year warranty with TV's, an excellent delivery service and fantastic customer care, and of course they will still price match the likes of Currys.

but their free warranty is still severely limited and doesnt cover a lot of the same stuff a paid one does.

if their free warranty was the absolute amazing selling point, why do they have a premium service plan for TVs too?

It is still far better than what you don't get from Currys or Dixons for free.

Currys or John Lewis...no brainer really.

John Lewis every time.;-)
