They can be replaced, but finding the right part might be difficult.

An easier option would be to buy a usb pci card.

Get a converter from ps2 to usb then look for a USB hub.. This would work I'm pretty sure..?!?

your best solution is to either buy something like this and mount it in a drive bay;

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14889

Or something like this for a PCI slot

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4702

It depends whether you want the ports on the front or the back, the PCI option is easiest

That gave me a chuckle. It won't work for several reasons. Firstly, PS/2 is slooooooow. Secondly, it only accepts keyboard and mouse signals. Thirdly, USB to PS/2 converters don't exist, only PS/2 to USB.

Won't work, it uses the same connection as the broken front ports the OP already has.

A PCI USB card is your best bet and will work regardless of other USB ports (assuming the problem is with the ports themselves and not a setup problem).

The adapters exist either way (to allow a USB keyboard/mouse to run through a PS/2 port or the other way round) although they're only for keyboard/mice as you mention, for desktops it's best stick in a PCI USB card if possible or a PCMCIA/Express USB card for laptops.

Plug changers exist for keyboards and mice that support both PS/2 and USB but they rely on the device itself to speak PS/2. I've never seen a device that actually converts or adapts signals from USB to PS/2. If they do exist do you have a link?

On that note I just got a new USB optical mouse and when plugged with an adaptor into a PS/2 slot it gets power but the icon doesnt move.

Any ideas?

Did the adapter come with the mouse? If not then the mouse probably doesn't support USB.

If it did, are you plugging it in with the computer turned off? PS/2 doesn't support hotplugging like USB.

When you say Dead can you see burning around board ?

If not then where the headers go to mobo remove them if in a block will be easy, otherwise remember which vcc goes where eg which pin /coloured wire goes where. sketch em :lol

You may have a situation similar to that of one of my mobo's / pc's whereby static builds up, some cap not discharging etc and usb port is then unrecognised in windows or operating system, devices then malfunction whilst connected to that usb port or simply do not work at all as if they are nto even plugged in.

Unplug power cord form PC and then do the above, leave them off for say upto 5 minutes and see if that helps.
If you have power issues you really should be upgrading to something else or run the risk of a surge and whatever device connected being damaged or more damage to the board etc.

No adaptor came with the mouse, I just assumedany usb mouse could go in the PS/2 slot as have bought usb mouses before without the ps/2 adaptor that work fine.

Yeah, I guess they're phasing ps/2 support out now.
