Alternative to BT

I've been trying to reinstate BT in my house after being away from them for five months. I need to get a phone line put in because I have sky booked for an installation in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately BT are proving extremely difficult to deal with (twice i've been on hold for well over an hour only to be told someone would phone back within a fortnight - they didn't)

Is there another provider i could approach instead of BT, and who don't require an existing BT line?

Any help appreciated!

They provide a phone that plugs into your router and has a normal phone line. It's very cheap to use and you can top it up from the net. It is just like having a landline phone in your house.

I use mine all of the time, plus if you take it anywhere in the world and plug it into a router then it operates the same as if it was in your house.

edit

You get a phone number (mine is an 0151 code) but you can pick anything and people phone you on that at normal BT rates.

They also need an existing phoneline, although they dont specify that it must be BT

Doesn't have to be BT anymore...........as long as it's a working phoneline.

Thats quite cool but it needs an internet connection which I cant get until I have sky installed - and they wont do an installation without an existing phoneline. Nightmare!

You can have it without a phone line if you purchase a standard SKY box. I'm getting sky + which wouldnt work properly without a phoneline. I could get the sky installation done without the phoneline and then wait till BT get thier finger out, but then sky would charge me for doing a remote activation of the Sky+ service.

Thats part of the problem I'm afraid. The reason the line has been dead for 5 months is that the council done extensive repairs to the building and i had to move out. I noticed when we returned that the line to the house was damaged. A couple of days later the council, phsically reinstated the visibly knackered phoneline to where it came from, but knowing the council that isn't neccesseraly an indication that they have properly connected it!
