Alternative to iPod or Ipod again?

Right then since my 40gb iPod video has died I need a replacment.

I was very happy with it but are there some alternatives I should be looking at?

I'm pretty open to options at the mo, I'm happy with the same again (I think 80gb is the current equivalent) but would be tempted to take out an extra warrenty on it or there is the Itouch which is a bit OTT for me but it does satnav too which means I could sell my axim I guess.

I only used Itunes because I had too, all of my music is stored on a PC in mp3 format so any player that supports drag & drop would be cool as I have no Ipod specific hardware apart from a car charger so are there any better players around I should be comparing Ipod's too.

As you can tell from my rambling post - I'm looking for some inspiration :)

Cheers,
worto.

I tried a few things before finally getting an iPod, phillips, creative etc etc... I have to say that the iPod is the best device I've used.

I've actually never used it with iTunes, I use Winamp, which allows you to do everything iTunes does other than download music, but I find it less clunky and slow, iTunes makes my slightly aging laptop crawl during large transfers.

One of the main reasons I now wouldn't switch away from an iPod is because I have an in-car kit for it and the dock/remote at home to connect it to my hi-fi. I'm no Apple fanboy, but they are the market leaders for a reason IMO.

Samsung Mp3 players are good

MS Zune :)

the Creative ZEN or the XI-Fi would be good options, they both have better sound and video than the current ipods and you can use Windows Media Player or just Drag & Drop :)

thanks for the info guys - finally I have something to start looking at.

Just looked at the current samsung & it only does upto 4gb - do you know any model in paticular that will do more juicy?

Will check out the Zune, Creative & XI-Fi next :)

Might end up buying another Ipod anyway but at least I'll know I looked around :)

Cheers,
Steve.

I'd hold off for a few days if I were looking to buy an ipod/mp3 player. Apple are due to release "several" new/replacement models. They expect to replace the nano with a totally new model. Also rumoured to be going is the classic model. Might be that the touch gets capacity upgrade too.
Hold off till later this week - if nothing else once the replacements come out then the refurb store should have a few bargains on it!!

Brill - thats good info - thanks, I'm in no rush, don't need anything desperatly until the sunshine comes back out for the next camping season so once I've decided I'll take my time until I can get a decent deal anyway.

Tomorrow at 6pm UK time, the apple store should be updated by 8pm.

Can't see them getting rid of the classic models, thats the bread and butter sales of ipods.

Won't definately get rid of the classic - might change to look of it, or increase the capacity again. Heck, they might not even touch it. There's a fair chance that the touch will get a capacity increase, and the nano is definately getting a new look & prob capacity increase.
There are a great many rumours about what will appear - normally apple are great at pulling off a surprise. Expect as many as 9 new/updated models.

cool, 16gb nano looks tempting, I wonder if they'll drop the prices of the classic at all though? I was happy with the size of the classic but they are quite expensive.
