Alternatives to Sky?

hodsey77hodsey77

Hi all,

I'm wanting to cancel my Sky contract, as they've been messing us about this last month...

I currently use Sky for everything, really - TV (Full package - SKY+); Wireless Broadband (up-to 5mb); and Telephone (Unlimited evening and Weekend Calls).

I also have to pay £12.75 (or something like that) to BT for the line rental.

We live in an area that does not have cable installed, so we can't go with Virgin.

I really like the SKY +, and this is the only thing that is making me want to stay with Sky. Does anyone else have something similar? Someone said that BT Vision is like that?

Total we're paying with Sky for everything (including the cost for line rental to BT) is about £60 a month, so it would have to be the same or cheaper than that.

I'm not wanting to have the Movies or Sports anymore, either, so they don't have to be factored in.

Can anyone recommend anything, or am I stuck with Sky?

Thanks!

    1) bt vision im 99% does not have channels like uk gold / skyone etc, so depends what you want
    2) you could do what ive done and buy a dish and a box and watch loads of free to air and foreign tv (fox / football etc) as well as stuff opened by a system patch etc
(look on ebay for motorised sat system to see what its all about)

talktalk to it for me!!!! They offer free broadband in some areas although I pay £10 a month .Their phone rates are very good and would recommend them to anyone, they have saved me a packet. Free view box for your telly you can always use a top up card to give yourself extra channels. This option will save at least twenty pounds a month.

Yea, can't seem to see anywhere on the BT Vision site that says exactly what channels are included...

UK Gold and Sky One are two which I would definitely prefer to have

Don't think I'll go along the foreign TV route, though... :)

Get yourself a "proper" satellite system and really open up the options!

You can get an auto-updating system that will give you lots of foreign channels that broadcast in English. I note you say you dont want sport or movies anymore (I can understand with the prices that sky charge!), but with this, you will get loads of film channels and live premiere football every week over the weekend. (Every game that sky shows, plus lots more... I can normally get a choice of about 6 or 7 games)

Cost? Depends on the dish system you chose, but can be bought for as little as £100 all in.

you get sky one with tiscali

You can bget sky 1 with tiscalis IP tv offering, you have to be in tiscali LLU'd exchnage to get it though. BT Vision is a freeview PVR, you only get freeview channels. You can download content from various providers though, it has a free BBC catch up service.

Can you? I can't find it on their website, can you point me to it? I would love to get rid of my Sky, but haven't as I didn't want to lose Sky One.

    Sorry, found it now!

The cheappest option is still Sky, and you can get your line rental through them as well for £10 per month inclusive of the free evening and weekend calls.
How have they messed you about if you don't mind my asking.

Quidco is paying £40 for tiscali TV. that'll nearly cover the + box

It looks iike you have to pay twice for the channels if you want it in more than one room.

Bit of a long story, really (skip this post if you're not interested, hehe!):

I phoned SKY on Saturday 19th April, to find out what savings I could make if I reduced my viewing package. I asked the lady how much I would save if I no longer subscribed to the Movies, and she told me I would save £7. I then asked how much I would save if I also withdrew the Sports - she told me my bill would drop to £21.

I couldn't believe the price drop, so I said I though that I would probably do that, but she told me that due to the way the billing works, I had paid for them up until the 13th May, and so I would be better phoning up then to have them removed. I said I would do that, and she told me she would put a note on my account saying that I would call back on the 13th May to see about reducing my package.

That evening, at around 11:30, my husband went to look through the Movie channels, to see what he wanted to record on the SKY Plus, and they were all turned off! The Sports was off too! We could not believe it!

My husband said he would phone up, and tell the person he spoke to that they had been turned off in error, and ask them to be started again.

He phoned Sky, and after a few minutes was put through to a Gentleman overseas (India, I believe). He explained the situation, that I had phoned up that day to see what the price drop would be, and that I would phone back on the 13th, and that someone had turned them off in error. The gentleman said that if we wanted to upgrade our package to the Movies and Sports, we would be tied in for a month! My husband said that we did not wish to upgrade - we already subscribed to the Movies and Sports - and that someone had turned them off without us asking for it to be done. The gentleman then hung up on my husband!

My husband called straight back, and got through to another gentleman from India, who understood the situation, apologised for our inconvenience, and said that he would get them turned back on for us. He also said he would credit us £5 for the inconvenience.

All seemed OK, until I got home yesterday to find a letter waiting for me, telling me that I had upgraded my Sky package, and the price differences I would have to pay (i.e. more for the first month).

My husband then phoned up and was again put through to India, where a gentleman was telling us that we were tied to the new contract we started on the 19th for at least a month! He said that we were not able to phone on the 13th to lower our package anymore, as we had just subscribed to it and it is for at least a month!

Anyway... looks like we're tied in for a bit longer, and and having to pay extra for the privilege!

I'm scared to get one of those, hehe! Is it illegal? :-S
