Alton Towers Compensation

So I spent a weekend away with the kids and missus, travelled to Alton Towers Friday and checked into the hotel etc. To cut a long story short had 2 days in the park planned. At 4am of our only overnight stop in the resort the hotel fire alarm went off and by the time the fire brigade and resort staff declared the hotel safe to enter it was (0615) we had to sit in the lobby with other guests for over 2 hours.
I don't have a problem with being evacuated because of a fire, and to be fair the staff and resort handled the incident really well. My issue is that my daughters 2nd day in the park was ruined because of this neither could barely stay awake after 1300 and both got rather grumpy (the youngest giving up and falling asleep). Alton Towers have compensated us with 4 x passes for a return to the theme park in the next year, which I thought was fair enough. My missus on the other hand thinks we should of been partially refunded instead. The refund to be fair would be better as we had no intention of going back (much as we enjoyed it|) at any time in the future 3.5 hour drive is a canny way to travel for a day out.
What would you do in this situation? I believe we've been fairly compensated (all other guests received the same compo), my wife thinks not.

Thanks

I think what you got was fair. Alton generally won't give you any money back, just more passes. You could always stick the passes on eBay to get some money back.
#2
Sell the four passes then.

Better to miss a day of your holiday than the rest of your life together with your family because of a fire.

I think that this is a very fair compensation offer. As you say, they handled the situation as best they could. It sounds as though the situation was out of their control.
#4
I would email them and explain - you may also get free hotel thrown in if you ask for it.

Didn't you say
Alton Towers have compensated us with 4 x passes for a return to the theme park in the next year

So not having to go back any time soon is fine, but you get a free day out next year?

bloody mother-in-laws !!! i think that was a fair gesture on the parks behalf as you say it was out of their control, be very different if they hadn't done anything.

Always look at "the Mother" before you get married as one day you'll find yourself married to the same person! :)

Good luck... sounds like you'll need it.

I'm gonna leave it in the wifes hands, she can sort it out. I'm quite happy to go back next year (or sell them).
Like I said I thought they resort dealt with the incident well, and I never even thought about any sort of compensation.
If she wants to email/write to them I'll let her. She seems to be seeing a bit more sense now that I'm telling her that some random people I talk to on a online grocery shop agree with me.

Fanpages: To be fair her mother is still easy on the eye at her age, just they both talk alot of nonsense.

I'd just let the wife get on with trying to get some better compo.

worst case scenario is they say no and you have to put up with her mouthing off for a bit until the next drama happens, who knows they may actually listen to her and give her some cash to shut up.

This is true I have the voucher in hand, so I'm not going to end up any worse off. Think I'll leave it in her hands.

I'd get a couple of camels so long as neither talked (they both have dodgy accents and spout alot of rubbish).

I think its fair, to be honest with fire alarms they did what they should. Perhaps worth writing a letter and stating how far away you live, may be they would offer a discount for the hotel in the future.
Sadly short breaks are often ruined by something usually the weather and sometimes we just have to accept it at that. Just glad to know they dealt with it properly. We were in a hotel in France last year when the fire alarm went off it was total bedlam staff saying it was a false alarm, manager saying it was not and the fire brigade had to check it out and worse off the Russians who just refused to move their children out of the bedrooms. Thank god it was a false alarm.
#16
It wasn't their fault probably kids so the gesture they made was fair enough that's 240 quids worth of tickets it's an inconvenience by as above better safe than sorry
#17
I think what you got was very fair, would you have preferred they didn't wak eyou in the event of a fire?! They obviously want you to go back and have an enjoyable time, so as not to remember the crappy time. You could always try and sell the tickets, if you really don't want to go back, but I think the fact you have accepted them means you can't seek further compo.
#18
Op praises them for their actions with the fire alarm and he is happy with the tickets but the OH and the mother-in-law aren't!! They want more! Op can't help who he married!! lol
#19
I think you should complain - the nerve of it, kicking you out of your bed just because they thought the hotel was burning down.
#20
I've done some googling, I'm pretty sure that now you've accepted the tickets, it's in full and final settlement of any claim you may have... maybe. Did you have to sign anything for them? I'd be wary of trying to make a further claim or complaint. I know how it is though, when they speak to their mother in law. It's the same in this house, only with my husband. Goes round there perfectly sound, comes home with a whole host of new issues... have fun!
#21
It was a cracking weekend and the missus was happy with the compo (free tickets) until her mother who is a professional complainer saw the whole thing different. The voucher is valid for the remainder of this year and all of next so it's not like we'll have a chance to use it, the mother in law only lives an hour away from the park.
We didn't sign for it the vouchers where pushed under every door in the hotel, needless to say some peoples at breakfast had gone missing.
I am happy with 4 tickets, I am happy that I stayed in a resort/hotel that acted responsibly during the incident and I enjoyed the following day. I'm just having my missus read these comments and shes starting to see it my way again.

Just tell your wife to say to her that you are both happy after great thought about what you have been given.

If I need any tickets for AT, I'll let you know :p

But you were robbed of a couple of hours sleep that you had paid for.
Doesn't the hotel have insurance for things like this? Real fire or not?
I would expect a night in the hotel to be thrown in also.

I bet any staff who worked later than their normal shift got paid for it.
The fire brigade would have been paid also.
Our company used to get charged for false alarms.
I believe it is standard practise.

Good on your mother in law.
