Am I being unreasonable?

SunshineStacey Avatar

Hi, would appreciate some views on this please!

I bought a digital camera on Ebay on Monday and paid for it minutes after winning it. I have not received any communication from the seller at all, despite sending about four messages asking when I can expect to receive the item and so far I have not received any response at all. Fortunately it was too expensive only about £15 as it was only one to tied me over until Christmas.

Its driving me mad not getting a reply as I wanted it for the weekend. I wish they would just tell me so I could get another if its not going to turn up?

What should I do: - just stop whining and be patient or start kicking off?

Thanks guys

What was the postage stated on the listing?

even if it were first class, they always have the old "could take upto 3 days" excuse!

Yeah i think 2-3 days for first class is reasonable but I would like an email saying roughly when to expect it. I get fed up of people doing that on ebay. If you state 1st class or 24 hour delivery then they should live up to it! If not , just put sellers standard rate!

Yeah, you can request the sellers contact details and call them. If the contact details are mince then report them to eBay and then file a dispute with PayPal.

However you are supposed to allow a reasonable amount of time to receive the item and unless you specifically stated to the seller that you wanted the item soon then theres not a lot you can do at the moment.

Even first class post doesnt guarantee next day delivery nowadays, its not been like that for years now, although the majority of post sent first class gets delivered within a couple of days, Royal Mail state that you cant file a lost in the post claim until 21 days has past (I think).

not being funny but as a seller myself i hate it when i get bombarded with emails from the buyer. i tend to ignore them. the item will be posted when i get round to posting it and no amunt of pestering is going to get it any quicker. sorry but i say be patient. most sellers stipulate upto 10 days for delivery as this is what royal mail tell you. if it was shop bought on the net you wouldn't get it any quicker.

i say wait until 10 days then use the dispute console to log a dispute. if you paid through paypal you will get your money back in its entirety if you have been ripped off. when you log a dispute it automatically takes the money back from the seller before they have a chance to take the money out. I have had one person do this to me and it is bloomin iratating, especially when i was in the right!

I hope i haven't appeared too snooty and I hope you get your belongings soon. don't forget if you used paypal you are protected and will get your money back...so just waiti a little longer before jumping in with both feet

Just because it states first class post, doesn't mean the seller will post straight away. If i need something quickly i always email the seller before i bid and ask them is its possible for them to post quickly, I've never had an issue with a seller if i do this. if you needed the item quickly you really should have done that. they might be busy people who only log in every few days.

Don't mention eBay on here............you'll have the militant members kicking your door down soon once they've investigated every transaction you've completed in your life.

Hi guys, thanks for all your replies!

yeah it said 1-2 days delivery.

I sell on ebay too but I always extend to the courtesy of replying to people that have bought things from me, isnt that good communication. I was after all only asking when I could expect to receive it as it hadnt turned up in the time it said it would.

My problem is that they havent replied at all I am getting a little worried!

Up to 10 days your having a giraffe what do you sell or whats your id so i know to avoid you.
Yes you would get it quicker i buy stuff online alot often if i buy in the morning i get it by the next day.
Ignoring people's emails isnt very polite and ive NEVER in 4 years on ebay seen a seller state up to 10 days let alone most sellers saying this. Most say 3-4 days

Same here, it only takes a second to send a quick reply to your buyer. OK, sometimes I have to admit that I roll my eyes and moan like billy-o at some of the questions they ask, or like this when the contact you after only a couple of days to see if it's been sent yet (give us a chance) but I would still reply politely and let them know when it had been posted etc.

I know however, that a lot of people don't reply as I usually chase up non feedback leavers after a couple of weeks, or those who haven't notified that they've received their item, so it works both ways. If only people would all just conform it would make ebay so much easier and everything only takes a second to do - SO LEAVE FEEDBACK PEOPLE!!! (As you can see, this is my bugbear!!)

Exactly!! All they have to do is leave feedback which gets rid of that and confirms to you that they've received it, how hard can it be! Quite hard for some people it would appear!!

I don't think it's unreasonable to know where you stand at all, if I hadn't had any communication by now I would have also written to the seller just politely asking when I'm likely to receive the item. In most cases it isn't needed as the seller drops a simple mail telling me when the item is on its way which is all it needs.

Recently when buying an item I received no response when I won the item then later received mail saying the guy was on holiday and he'd sort it out when he got back...why set your end date (this wasn't buy it now) at a time when you're not going to be able to post the item?

I don't leave feedback for a seller who hasn't left it for me first although I do always try to make sure I mail the seller to let them know I have received the item.

When i sell i always thank buyer for prompt payment and for buying from me, and as i usually state sellers standrad rate as p&p price as been stung b4 stating 1st class and having a pedantic P.O staff insisiting my packet is a parcel. I let them know its posted and by what service

Hey! I buy of ebay and really appreciate the seller sending an email advising me what is happening.... its reassuring.
Last Friday I bought a SONY HD Camcorder extremely cheaply (about £300 off list price)off 'Camera Centre' in Cardiff. I bought at about 3:30 pm and it was delivered THE NEXT DAY at 10:00am IN NORTHERN IRELAND. They also sent me an email thanking me for my purchase and advising me they had despatched.

NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL SERVICE!

I tried the camcorder over the weekend and discovered there was an intermitent problem with the hard drive and rang them. They said to return it and they would refund the postage. I said instead of refunding the postage, how about a Por Duo memory card?

I sent the camcorder guaranteed next day delivery (WED) and received a new one on THURS @ 10:am
NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL SERVICE!
They also included a SONY Pro Duo + adapter 2GB

If all companies on Ebay treated their customers like this........ instead of "I ignore emails and send when I'm ready' as quoted, we would all have a better experience.
Ps Hats off the Camera Centre - Cardiff - well done!

Thanks guys, your feedback on this is really appreciated!

I agree with the majority, I buy and sell a little on ebay myself.

I checked the sellers feedback (which is 80 something) and everyone was raving about how quickly item arrived which is why I decided to go for this one.

I have sent four very polite messages just asking when I can expect item.

But to date, no message and no camera! I am gonna have to go out now and buy one coz I need it for a fancy dress party tomorrow. I knew I was taking a risk hoping it would come in time anyway but thats not my issue here, my issue is that they havent even replied to me!

How long do you think you should leave it before raising a complaint and requesting money back from paypal?

Thanks guys x

I would give benefit of doubt yet-i have seen people get a few negs and it was because of a bereavement or seperation...im pretty sure you have to wait 10 days.
I would get contact details and let them know you dont want the item now as sourced it due to their lack of contact.
[Holiday Pirates]#21
Thank you.

I have just sent this message.

As it has now been five days since I won and paid for this item and your postal description sasy 1-2 days for delivery, can I presume that this item is not going to arrive?

You have not responded to any of my messages at all and made no communication.

If I do not receive a response by 5pm today, I will have to report the matter to ebay in an attempt to recover my money.

Sorry it is necessary to take this action but as you have made no attempt to reply to my messages I do not feel that this trasaction is completing fairly.

I am just really annoyed that they havent replied. I would have just left it if they had replied saying there was some sort of a problem and couldnt post for a while, but they havent even bothered to do that, and that comment that Louise saying that if a buyer bombards me with messages I just ignore them and they will get it when they get it (or summat like that) has really annoyed me. After all, the customers always right lol.

i would tell them how you feel, there could be a genuine reason! my neg was due to me not receiving emails and the first i knew of a problem was the neg! quickly revoked when he realised the problem.

If you communicate with the seller and nothing is resolved then leave negative feedback or no stars for communication?

Nothing to be embarrassed about, it's entirely the seller's fault for no communication whatsoever - if I had no camera and no communication after five days I would have sent a similar mail, if you get a response point out as you have here that a simple message letting you know it's on the way would have been appreciated.

Not sure you may be aware of this but ebay changed their messaging system this week or last week and alot of messages which have been sent are not being recevied.

Messages are also going directly to junk/spam folders on email which alot of people do not check.
[Holiday Pirates]#30
I have sent a lot of messages to a lot of people this week as I have bought a good few items this week and had replies for all of them so I doubt very much that they havent received all four (or possibly five) of the messages that I sent!

The problem I have about leaving HONEST (that is exactly how I feel about the transaction) feedback as they havent left feedback for me yet so they could reply with negative feedback too!

I'm not unreasonable, I would have been happy with a message saying that there was a problem, and even if they had sent a message saying theres a problem I will send it in two weeks, I would have been happy with that, a little annoyed coz i wanted the camera straight away, but that was my fault for not checking before I bought.

Anyway, I have decided I am just not going to leave feedback, at least not until after they have left it for me first, as I did make the payment first and literally minutes after the auction ended so the decent thing for them to do would have been to have left feedback immediately for me.

Thanks guys for all your nice comments on this one.

And yes...........I think you could be right, perhaps it is louise whose the seller?? perhaps she can answer this?

Thanks x

Sellers can't leave negative feedback anymore, they can either leave positive or none
[Holiday Pirates]#32
ahhh right, I didnt realise that!

hmmm, shall i or shouldnt I lol, I dont think I have the bottle lol

and just by way of an update, I have still not received any communication!

maybe leave a neutral instead then

Bear in mind there's also the feedback star rating as well so if you want to give positive feedback you can say something like "Item arrived as decribed although no communication at all from seller" you can also give them one out of five stars in the separate rating.

I would leave some feedback just to let other ebayers know, I tend to avoid those that have consistent feedbacks showing problems with communications or delivery. I am glad to hear it arrived ok as I hate getting no communication at all and not knowing what was happening especially as a while back I got scammed on a laptop and never heard anything again.

John

If you're happy with the camera (£15 is not a bad deal after all) I'd leave a pos but maybe mention the slow delivery and also give him poor star ratings for communication and delivery time.
He can't neg you and the star ratings are anonymous too

yep i had them come through on hotmail but not on ebay...and paypal payments showed on paypal but not hotmail:?

I dont really think five days delivery was that slow and the camera is in good condition and worth the money, I would just have appreciated a message to tell me when to expect it, especially as I had asked (four times!).

Thanks guys, I will leave appropriate feedback.

did you get it for such a good price she was unhappy with it? i have had that before-begrudging contact made days later...

I would say neutral feedback for long delivery and bad communication and negative if it comes broken or isn't what was described (or does not come at all).

I'm still waiting on something that was (supposedly) posted on the 29th. I was suspended the day after (for sharing an address with a suspended account) so although the seller rang me and said everything was fine and the sale had gone through I still haven't received it. Don't even know if I have any comeback being suspended for guilt by association as I can't leave feedback or lodge a complaint. :-(

Early days yet though as I suspect it's sitting on a shelf at my local RM parcel centre (who won't pick up the bloody phone), like a couple of previous packages.

I'm glad you got the camera and hope you were able to use for Fancy Dress.

Don't feel bad about your email, they should have responded to your email and left you a happy customer. Mabye their next customer will be treated better!
