Amazon - how to search?

Does anyone know if there is a way to search Amazon without Marketplace?

I find it so frustrating when my search returns lots of marketplace results and they dont even appear to show Amazon first in some search's.

I'm not interested in marketplace and would search ebay if I wanted to buy from that type of seller.

I can't see how to do it on Amazon but though there migh be a third party way to do it, like the site that lists the low value "basket fillers" to make your basket upto £15 or using froogle.

Can you give an example search? I don't think I quite get what you mean.

If you're seeing Marketplace sellers but not Amazon, it's because Amazon don't stock the item anymore. They list tens of thousands of items that are not longer being manufactured and which they couldn't sell even if they wanted to.

Is there way to search Amazon without seeing "Limited availability" items?

Thats true too, they should have options like "show only Amazon" & "Show in stock only"

OK, search "DDR"

The first three returns are from Amazon, then you have two only available from marketplace, them item 6 is an "in stock" book at Amazon, then more marketplace stuff. Back down to item 12 more memory available and in stock at Amazon.

It's so frustrating having to look through all the marketplace stuff and you can't tell its marketplace until you click on it and look in more detail.

I've just searched high and low and there's no decent advanced search function. I think the site is designed around being able to narrow your results by category once you have entered the initial search query.

I don't think they would allow you to omit market place items though - it's a big part of their business I imagine.

A petition is needed!

I can't think this would be too hard to implement hmmmm... maybe I something I can look at adding to the Amazon Deals page.

You just want to enter a search string and have it return results, sorted by price that are only sold by Amazon and not a Marketplace seller right?
#11
Yes, it is quite annoying in Amazon's search function. That would be great if Admin could add something to the Amazon deals :)

And if there is no price (Limited availability thing) then not to show it too. Please :)

However I believe that filtering out Marketplace sellers isn't that easy as it might seem.
For example, take Buffalo Linkstation 250GB. It shows:

Price: £132.54 Availability: In stock. Dispatched from and sold by overclock_ltd.

So it'll be filtered then, right?
But, if you click at Marketplace, then you'll see the following:
£127.27, NEW, Fulfilled by Amazon, LOW PRICE

Would be amazing!

Can you also find me a Nintedo DS Lite in stock with Mario for £110. Has to be in store though as I want to buy it tomorrow.

You're the best!

Edit: And I have some washing that needs doing come to think about it. Thanks!

(I was serious about the DS deal)
[admin]#14
Kommunist do you have any examples of the Limited Availability items?
#15
Here you go .

It normally says in description (after you clicked the link):

This item is not in stock or has been discontinued
#16
Yes yes yes, I am glad this drives other people mad also...I have all but given up searching amazing these days when I am doing a price comparison because it's next to useless. How a massive site like amazon has such a terrible search function is beyond me!
#17
Yes, it causes endless misery for me when searching for things.

If admin could do something to help us search Amazon I think it would make a lot of people very happy, I had no idea when I posted other people had such strong views too.
[admin]#19
Yep have taken the requests on board and should have something Monday. I was hoping we'd have it done on Friday but ran out of time.
#20
Admin,

That would be really great!

I emailed Amazon to ask if it was possible to exclude Marketplace traders... their reply:

"At present we are not having any option of searching exclusive for
marketplace seller items.

"We appreciate that you've taken the time to send us your suggestion.
I have passed along your comments to our developers; customer
feedback like yours is essential in helping them determine what
additional features our visitors and customers want most."

Apart from, I suspect, misunderstanding my question, it can probably be inferred that Amazon are not currently looking at being able to search excluding (or exclusively for) marketplace traders.

Of course, they have no reason to provide an option to exclude Marketplace Traders - especially when they don't count towards the £15 order level for free delivery!
#21
yeah the main issue with marketplace sellers is the P&P. It could be anything, and you don't see it until checkout. It really bugs me, especially for low price (<£10) goods
[admin]#22
Ok have a very crude search, so don't go posting it anywhere but test it out in here and see how it goes:

http://www.hotukdeals.com/amazon-search

Some of the pages have less products becuase you can only get a query return of 10 items at a time and the marketplace ones are sorted out, best results should be at the top anyway.
#23
Says I have to be logged in to access the page - but I already am!
#24
I can access it ok admin, maybe needs to be turned on for general member use :)
[admin]#25
Ooops one sec....

Tried it with three searches - not bad.

Problems:
1. What is the meaning of 'Blended'? Whatever search word is used it produces 0 results.
2. Can amount of items/page be set? Say, I prefer to see 100 items/page, someone else want 10.
3. When there are many pages, it is impossible to jump to some of them. For example, enter Philips as a search in Electronics and then go to page, say 83. It'll show an empty page.
[admin]#27
1. It's supposed to do a search across all categories. I'm getting the same problem as you though.
2. Amazon only let us do a query a second and they only provide 10 results a query. So what we've done is split it into pages so each time you click a page it gets the next set of ten.
3. Yeah that happens because all those bottom ones are all marketplace.

I'm not entirely happy with it because of these issues too. The other way to do it is do a query and cycle through let's say the first 100 results dumping them in a database and then do it again if you need more.

Hi Admin

Thanks for your work so far!

Some feedback. I've tried to do a search for a Powerball:

1. I needed to go to Amazon to find out which category to use (because the 'blended' isn't working yet) - If I try the wrong single category I just get a 'blank look'!

2. I get 9 results shown on 2 pages. My 5th result (for a Powerball 250Hz Pro - Amber) directs me to a page for the item being sold by 'your-shopping'. My 6th result directs me to a page for an item being sold by Amazon.
#29
1. This is what I thought but just decided to verify :)
2. Understood.
3. Is there any way to get rid of it? Not that it is a problem though.

To solve 2 and 3 - how about getting all items in a buffer, then format it internally, remove marketplace and build pages according to user's settings in forum. This search might take a while but then you can display something like 'wait, search in progress. to be completed in..seconds' kind of a message.

Sorry I am not familiar with web programming, so not sure if that is possible when multiple queries (several users at a time) are in progress.
#30
Admin thanks for this.

Any chance you can order the results low to high price or give a drop down with a choice of hight to low, low to high etc.

Thanks again for the work.
[admin]#31
Try it again now. It does next 10, previous 10 instead of doing pages so that it will always have 10 results.
#32
It seems to better now. Problems:

1. Search relevance. Type 'atmt' (no quotes) and search returns ATMT products and books with word 'admit' in the title. I guess this is how Amazon works?
2. When searching in All Categories, there are no thumbnails displayed. However, when searching for the same item withing a category, then pictures are there.
3. If you can't get exact number of items ex marketplace, then maybe just put some warning on this page? Otherwise people would always ask "why out of 200 items I only see 30?"

This is great Admin... don't know if it can be improved at all, but it could be a very useful resource.

is there a way of searching just marketplace? I am sure I used to have a site where you could search for DVD's etc for 1p & p+p
