Amazon Kindle

Looking at buying one of these for a christmas present but have a few questions.

I've read around and one of the negatives was the availability of new books, is this still a problem as the article I read is around a year old.

Also another drawback was that it could only read the format downloaded from amazon, is this true, and is it really a drawback? If anyone has any alternatives to the Kindle for around the same price I'd appreciate it.

I bought the Iriver Story for £149 a while ago because I was worried about book compatability with the Kindle. It has a built in MP3 player which was a bonus for me.

Calibre software is free and is helpful to convert formats so that you can still buy Kindle books and convert them to EPUB to read on the Iriver.

I was looking at this and apparently it's quite easy to download and convert books to be read by kindle.

Thanks for the reply. Does anybody else have any alternatives or comments on the Kindle?

Kindle is excellent! Sometimes you may have to wait a tad longer for an ebook to be released but not a major pain for me! The only place to purchase books for the Kindle is from Amazon, however you can easily convert epubs or any other format using software such as Calibre to view on the Kindle. I think Amazon's pricing is fair not absurd when comparing some Kindle books to ePubs! However pricing come's down to the publishers!

Cool, think I'll go for the Kindle 3G then, although still not decided if the 3G is worth getting, as it's for my mum :p

Just to confirm then, you can convert other formats to into kindle format?

You can't convert DRM ebooks (not easily anyway). So if she buys her books it is amazon only, if she is a pirate or reads copyright free books then you can convert them.

3G is only worth it is you don't have access to wifi hotspots.
