Green Day have confirmed that their 2004 album American Idiot is to be adapted into a stage production.
The musical is a collaboration between the band and Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer and will reportedly open at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California this September.
Lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong told The New York Times: "It doesn't make a lot of sense, but that's what I love about it. When people see it, it's going to be my wildest dream."
Speaking about the musical's plot, Mayer said: "If you read it [American Idiot] a certain way, you can pull out a multiplicity of voices." The stage show, which could move to Broadway if the Berkeley run is a success, will include 19 performers playing characters in their early 20s.
21st Century Breakdown, the band's first album since the Grammy-winning LP, will be released on May 15.
