Amsterdam - Advice please

Butterflies Avatar

I've never been for a weekend break away - only the family holidays.

I am looking forward to taking my husband to Amsterdam for a few days for his birthday in August, I realise this is a place that many people here on HUKD might have been.

Do you know of any agents that offer really good packages (meaning cheap and near to the attractions)

I would be grateful for any advice - thank you.

lol what attractions are you referring to?

lol - I'm not the saucy type - poor husband!

We might take a little walk - but I can imagine I'd be scared off of anything saucy!

Depending where you live it would be a lot easier to get an Easyjet flight and hotel yourself and then pay for attractions over there.

Having been three times I'm not sure what attractions you mean as it all seems to be standard stuff, such as the Heineken factory tour, Anne Franks house, museums etc as they're pretty easy to get whilst over there and not that expensive anyway.

I go every year (going again in Sept !).

Me & the misses stay in a double room in the Bulldog - right in the Red Light area.

Very safe/secure & near all the "attractions" you will ever want lol

The Toren Hotel on Keizersgracht was good for me and my gf a couple of years ago. Flew over via easyJet, and bought tickets for the Reijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Anne Frank House when we got there.

I'm still looking at the amsterdam mini cruises from either hull or newcastle. Does that appeal to you? You would only get the day to spend in Amsterdam and wouldnt need a hotel unless you go for a longer break

Fly, only takes 50 mins.........

in the very centre they are like models:thumbsup:, the farther out of the centre you go the more beer goggles you are going to need! then right on the outskirts there are the boys in basks and sussies, you wont believe your eyes!!!!!

agents will take a cut....check lastmiute.com, laterooms and also hostel bookers etc for cheap hotels

amsterdam is extremely expensive around 6/7 euros a pint even hostels are around 50 euros a night for a double some shared b.room some ensuite

i just stayed in rembrantplein at hotel rembrandt double room with ensuite for a week and we got a deal for 300 euros....free breakfast every morning and we got upgraded to room with 42" plasma in overlooking the square.......not that u stay in the room much anyways

although it was a tad noisy above a bar....i had no problems getting to sleep lol

The Bulldog is classed as a 5* hostel. Think it's £100 a night.

I like it as it's very secure (doorman, need pass to get in etc), plus you can smoke & drink in the bar :)

i find the bulldog is severly overpriced on everything......same as grasshopper these days

too commercial and aimed at the first time tourist market really imho

not saying its not for everyone tho:) but there are better deals to be had

Coffeshop is overpriced, plenty of "alternative" places to go ;-)

I like staying there though for the reasons stated above !!

Hi Butterflies :)
I stay in Dam rak @ swissotel its right in the centre of Amsterdam on the edge of the main square. Its very clean and nice and you get a good breakfast. There is a decent bakers a few doors away where you can stock up on snacks, cos you will need them ;) The easiest way to get there from yours is via city airport fly with KLM ( they give you free tea n sandwiches on the plane ) its a fokker <- not swearing that is the name of the plane it takes 50mins. You can check out prices on KLM website for your flight. Its cheaper to go during the weekday. If you called the hotel direct you might get a better price on a double standard room. It also has a 24 hour gym in case you are feeling energetic :)

Hi Kaits thanks for the really useful info. I will look into that in the morning - it's got late now and I really should do sarnies for tomorrow.

Obviously you like shopping, what else did you do in Amsterdam. I have a love for windmills, and even get that lovely heart swelling when I see a wind turbine - lol.

I've been on a fokker before - it's quite an experience when you've only been on big planes before - lol.

Speak later - am very busy at the mo. Keeping the kids busy. My son though has nearly completed his reading quest already - there's no stopping the boy. He practically swallowed a whole joke book yesterday.

The baby made me laugh today - I don't know if you know Peter Pan, where all the children call out "I do, I do, I do believe in fairies"? Well I took all the kids to a puppet show today - it was fantastic. Then some fairies came out and the 20 month old started calling out "I do, I do I do I do I do" over the whole show - lol.

Night night
