I feel I may have made a minor slip with this one, but we'll see.

I bought a copy of Windows XP Pro from a German seller on Ebay. It was advertised as a full copy that will work on any machine. The first problem is that it didn't turn up, and the seller disappeared from Ebay. Cue the dispute, which was the first time that I'd ever raised a dispute on Ebay. However, in an unexpected twist my copy then turned up. Wanting to check that everything was in working order, I proceeded to attempt to install it. And couldn't. Why? Because the copy that I was sent was actually a Dell reinstallation CD, and refuses to work with Bootcamp on my Mac.

Here comes the (suspected) slip. The seller provided the tracking number to PayPal, and as the nature of my dispute has now changed I closed the dispute. I then found out not ten minutes after that you can only raise one dispute per transaction. Now I have attempted to contact the buyer about the issue with my copy of Windows XP, but am not hopeful of a response. If there is no response, can I do anything else through PayPal?

On a side note, if anybody knows how to make a Dell reinstallation CD with Windows XP Pro on it work with Bootcamp, I would appreciate it. Because at the moment it seems like I am faced with finding a copy of a Windows XP Pro install disc and hoping that the product key works.

Regarding ebay, as you say I don't think you can open 2 disputes against the same item, which seems wrong to me as in your case you may have a delivery issue followed by a 'not as described' issue.

Have you tried contacting ebay for advice?

The OEM installation key won't work on a standard copy of XP.

Shouldn't have closed the dispute till you had tested it all, if the nature of the dispute had changed you could of done that without closing it.

Think you will have to put it down to an error on your half and lean from it, if the seller isn't going to respond

You could try ringing Paypal and explain,a longshot but you've got nothing to lose at this point.

Might as well just get a pirate copy of a proper XP install CD and a non-genuine product key. I'm pretty sure using an OEM copy of XP on a machine that it's not supposed to be used on is just as 'illegal' as using a pirate disc.

Moral of the story.. don't both with genuine Windows. Even the 'genuine' copies are fake!

Yeah I'd agree with this. XP is no longer sold on its own so I'd have no qualms in getting a nice corporate copy from somewhere.

I have and am awaiting a response. I just thought I'd see if anyone has any experience on here. When I get a response from them I'll post it on here.

Yeah I didn't realise you could change the nature of the dispute, which of course in hindsight would have been the way to go.

If I get nothing constructive from either the seller or Ebay, then I don't think I'll have much choice other than to put it down to experience. Irritating, but that's life.

I'd prefer not to do this as a matter of principle, but as you say even the so called 'genuine' copies out there are somewhat dodgy nowadays. I guess it's a last resort. I'm not particularly keen on getting stung twice either way.

Well this is a turn up for the books. Just contacted PayPal, and whilst they cannot add another dispute on to that transaction, they have re-opened the old dispute and changed it to item not as described.

Considering PayPal's generally horrific reputation for customer service, I am impressed.

That's good news and why i suggested you give them a call as i've heard people have some success in changing the dispute after ringing and explaining:thumbsup:but it's very hit and miss as to whether they do it.
