Android on iPhones - anyone going to take the jump?

News has cone to light over the past week that developers have successfully ported Android to the iPhone 2g. Although still in major alpha stages the development team have got the major parts to work and are also working on ports to 3g, 3gs, ipod touch 1st gen and ipod touch 2nd gen.

Anyone on here have an iPhone and wouldn't mind a bash at using the little green robot on the phone when it is stable and fully working?

If anyone fancies a shot at putting Android on their 2g which has been pushed to the back of the cupboard and left to die a dusty death then the link to the how to is here:

To see the status of the iPhone/itouch you have then look here:

I think you'd be better off ebaying your iphone and getting a real 'droid phone.

This hack is really only for the hardcore users - "look, I have an Android iPhone and I only paid twice as much for it as a regular Android phone that is better than this crappy 2G"

Great app store, the underdog to the iPhone goliath, infinitely customizable with great help and custom builds on xda-developers forums.

It's the OS for the people who want their phone the way they want it, instead if being tied down to just the one offering (primarily Apple).

I tried it on the day the news was announced and got it working without much hassle.
It's very buggy, and early alpha. You can make calls and texts and browse with WiFi, a lot of stuff missing such as Market, Camera and so on but the thing it lacks the most is the ability to put the phone in standby. It's constantly on which drains the battery and makes it get very hot. There's no regular way to shut down the phone either. You have to do a reset instead.

At least you got it working and didn't brick it! Hopefully the dev team will be working like dogs to get it to a usable state, as well as adding it to other iphone/touch products. Would happily buy an ipod touch (again) to use android on it! Can't get enough of it.:)

I don't think you can brick it using the instructions. In worst case scenario you just boot into DFU mode and do a restore; and if you're daring enough then try the whole thing again.

The project has a load of devs jumping onboard to help, so progress will be a lot faster than it was with the one man that was working on it alone originally.

I finally have a use for my 2G which was just sat gathering dust until now! Can't wait for the Android tablets to come out too, definitely be getting myself one of those.

Yeah I suppose bricking an iPhone is nigh on impossible, just put it into iTunes and do a restore:thumbsup:

At the very least you could use it as a sat nav when the gps is up and running as Google has brought out navigation in the uk now:-D

EDIT:2g doesnt have gps, well that sucks.

Google are bringing out sat nav but you will need a 3g or wifi connection to use it. Other apps already on the iPhone need a gps signal only.
