Just moved into my new place, set up sky with tele and net, but ive had about 4 calls today and each day over the weekend from business with indian call centers trying to find details of me and are annoying me a great deal.

Apart from signing up to the telephone prefence list what else can I do and how on earth do they know my name and where i live when ive not gave my number to anyone, I dont even remember it yet.

Sign up to the telephone preference service asap. It takes about 2 weeks for it to kick in but works beautifully, we had the same. As soon as you get an unsolicited call just say I'm on the telephone preference service why have you called me and listen to how quickly they get off that call.

Cheers ill sort that out in the morning, just wondering how they got my details though, it seems they got them quicker than sky sent them to me lol. Also does anyone know what time they are allowed to phone u between? as they phoned me at 7am the other day!

http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/ Linky for you!

Also have you tried typing your number into google to see if anything comes up as we kept getting FAX machines ringing us turns out our number used to be a fax line and was still listed..

If they international calls there won't be much TPS can do as it doesn't govern overseas companies. We get the same calls time and time again, having caller ID helps as the phone will show 'international' so I can choose to leave it or even play games with them.

Here is something that may help

Because they can't govern what Indian call centres do and that's where 99% of them are.

You'll love this story from The Register:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/07/09/aaisp_honeypot/

A small telco decided to turn the tables on irritating unsolicited calls by setting up a block of dummy phone numbers that play messages to trick marketers into lengthy and pointless sales pitches.

Check out the comments as well - plenty of amusement: I particularly liked the story about the guy who took a cold call on his mobile in the middle of some serious paintballing. There's also more constructive ideas about how to have fun with cold callers.

Oh yes; call centres. Hours of fun limited only by your creativity

We found that, our number was once listed on the NHS website and was 1 digit out from a doctors surgery. We got some right funny calls on 1571, the best one was some old woman 'I know the surgery is open, I can see people going in from my window, why dont ever you answer the phone, im going to report you'. It was funny for about 3 days then got on my nerves badly. That number was changed.

Ive taken to either telling them to eff off, or when they ask for someone say youll just get someone to help them and i put the phone in the knife and fork drawer hehe. Let them waste their time talking to my spoons.
