so having been playing games going all the way back to the spectrum 48k, what would you guys say was the best generation console/computers for gaming.
i think the 16 bit generation (super nintendo / sega megadrive)
was the mutts nutts. no online play, no rip off dlc, just good old gaming

absolutely agree-the snes/megadrive era was all about the games-they had to be because the graphics were crap-lol! there were still some absolutely stinking games, but nowadays so much is style over substance-40 odd quid for a game that can be completed in a day? I dont care how good the graphics are-I want substance!

Dizzy on the Spectrum was the pinnicle of gaming!
All down hill since then ;)

Loved my Commodore 64 and Megadrive but my heart always goes out to the short lived Dreamcast

Also no over heating problems with older consoles! I've still got my jap imported dreamcast on the day of release and it still works like a charm!

Most game graphics werent crap in 16 bit era, they were often beautiful just not as capable as later generations.

People will be saying in like 10-15 years how the PS3/360 has terrible graphics.

And to OP I'd say the 8 bit computer era was the best i.e C64 and Spectrum, basic games but a lot of fun.

years? Minutes, more like, depending on which threads you read.

The early PC games where they would have the amazing cinematic cut scenes, I dreamt of the day when the actual games looked like that. Now they do they've skipped all the content.

Has to be the Amiga for me.

The first console I had was the Amiga 64, Blues Brothers, Soccer Kid, Lemmings etc, amazing games and ones I can still remember in my head to this day.

But the best console for me was the N64, it was a huge step up in graphics at the time and for me, Super Mario 64 and Goldeneye are the 2 best games I have ever played.

Yes the Amiga was awesome in its day. The WIMP environment was miles ahead of what PCs/Macs could do.
And Commodore 64 was also brilliant (again in its day), shadow RAM, sprites, interrupts and a sound chip to die for...simply outstanding.

Those were the days my friends.

Sticking to my Fanboy platform (PC) and going back in to the past, has to be Unreal Tournament, Quake, Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment. Biblically epic games lol.

For me there was the BBC Microcomputer ENVELOPE command with 14 parameters & the SOUND command with 4 parameters... it has all been downhill since :)

While I was a big fan of the SNES, I think the N64 was my favourite particularly as four player gaming was relatively standard which was great particularly at Uni plus at the time I could afford more games.

funny thing is, you could wait ages for the spectrum to load yet if a web page takes more than 5 seconds to load you complain that it takes ages.
also just imagine what Jeff Minter could do with all the millions that a game cost to develop nowadays (all those llamas)
