A wing, a prayer and the phone on standby to call M$ and explain why you need to do such a thing and why they should let you reactivate without coughing up for another copy of Vista.

so how do you do it?

Depends, do you have the full version or an upgrade disc?

All vista installs do a clean installation, you cannot upgrade from xp to vista without it being clean. When you install vista for first time it formats the drive without asking. i have not yet re-installed vista over vista so i dont know if you can actually keep previous files with new install.

well i have only done a clean install on my new pc with my ultimate 64bit version. i have also done two upgrade disc packages for my dad and my brothers laptops. I never saw any options to upgrade, probably because i was doing a clean install.

In that case just set your bios to boot from CD and stick in the Vista CD and follow the promts, obviously make sure you back up anything important onto DVD's or something first.
