when we try to ring that number off our home phone it says 'please use 1571 to check your messages'

thats because you're calling the same number from the same phone if that makes sense, it thinks you're trying to check your messages remotely.

I did have something similar. Some person at the local telephone exchange had made some mistakes and when people phoned another person living in the village they got dialled through to me. Phoned BT and they sorted it.

Just had a chat with a lovely indian lady who didnt have a clue what I was talking about, in the end she concluded that I had BT call sign so that I had two seperate numbers, why does the other number come from a different address? she has no idea?

Waste of time and effort, is there a number to get through to an English call centre?

Dial 147017070 it'll tell you the number of the line
#13
Its probably the phone number assigned to your broadband connection. I had the same thing and i checked with BT and that's what it turned out to be. You need to make sure you are ex directory else they publish that computer phone number.

What do you mean the phone number assigned to my broadband?

I have now phoned the number again and its ringing someone completely different from AS Electrics who says that is indeed their number but they dont have a watch for repair, they say they have had no problems with there phone line and have nothing to do with AS electrics....... the plot thickens???

BT VOIP numbers arent like standard numbers though are they? and how could someone else be using it ? its a standard 0161 number, the person i just spoke to lives in the same town as me but a mile or so away.

except my line is now very crackly, my broadband is slow , got another asian fellow ringing me back calling me by my sirname and repeating the same thing over and over and over about me having BT Call sign, which I dont have or at least havent signed up for. Trying to ask him why im getting another persons calls but he just kept repeating himself and ignored my requests to speak to an english person.
I feel sorry for these people theyre only trying to do a job but I feel more sorry for us customers trying to deal with someone who can barely speak the same language. I give up.

I had a second line at my old address that i never got billed for. It was a completely different number i did a few test calls to my girlfriend in france and didn't get charged for them. Few months later i pushed my luck and spent all night ringing those late night call shows. Must have clocked up over one thousand pounds. The line got cut off that month  that was 4yrs ago so i think i'm home dry.

P.s. I got through twice and got it wrong must have made over 100 calls. So don't bother with it.

Doesnt explain how Im receiving calls for someone elses businesses and houses though ! , I suppose it must be a 'crossed line' as stated above, I thought that only happened in films from the 50's !
