Hi all, we are off to Florida in a couple of weeks time and I was wondering if there was anything else to do there rather than the usual Disneyland and film sets. I have heard that Tampa Bay is supposed to be nice but not too sure how close to Orlando that is. Any ideas for something different would be greatly appreciated!!!

Many thanks.

Best time I've had was going to the Amway Arena in Orlando (easy to get to, just off I-4).

Saw an Orlando Magic home game (NBA Basketball).

Superb night.

We have been going to Florida for the last 14 years, and know the Orlando and Tampa Bay area well. It depends on what sort of things you are interested in and how far you want to travel in terms of journey time. If you can post these details, I will reply with what I think may be suitable.

My hubby is from Tampa and that's where we spend a good deal of time...

Tampa has gorgeous beaches being right on the Gulf of Mexico, especially the Clearwater/St Pete areas and the weather there is gorgeous. People who visit Tampa generally do so for the beaches and Busch Gardens, a huge adventure place with massive rollercoasters etc.

The weather in Orlando/Tampa of course is smokin hot and humid. Enjoy it! x x

We dont mind travelling as we have the use of a car whilst there. I would say anything up to 3hrs away.......is that a good enough distance or am i thinking too short!! any info would be greatly received. Many thanks.

If you really just want to avoid all the usual crap like Universal and other playparks, then try and hire a car and go and see the Gulf coast - Clearwater/Tampa etc - on the Gulf Coast you can see Dolphins in their natural habitat and not where they're held in captivity in the likes of Discovery Cove.

Tampa/Clearwater are only around a 2 hour drive.

Yes we can watch Dolphins swimming out in the bay from our windows. It so makes me laugh that they always swim towards me and swim AWAY from my husband lol They're gorgeous how they push the fish up ahead of them onto the beach.. I guess it's how they hunt.

I've done the whole let's swim with dolphins thing in Mexico, where at least they were held in a large pen in the middle of the ocean, but I do object to these parks that keep them in what amounts to a giant swimming pool.

Seeing them in their natural habitat can't be equalled. We stayed in St Pete's Beach, and went for a swim one night before dinner, just as the sun was setting. As we were happily bobbing about in the water, a school of dolphins swam past, back and forth for around an hour. It was breathtaking, and something everyone who has the chance to experience should go for.

There really is so much more to Florida than Orlando, folk who make the 8 hour plus trip should explore it more, it's very rewarding.

Ohhhh this sounds like paradise!! Seeing dolphins naturally in the sea whilst you are swimming must be some sight!!! I am gonna have to do that me thinks!!!!!

Gulf Coast was amazing, I've stayed at Sirata Resort, St. Pete Beach, twice, and would return tomorrow.

Also stayed at Treasure Island, another amazing stretch at St.Pete Beach.
Enjoyed the Beach, and town at Sarasota too.
All worth a visit in my opinion.

Nice contrast to the International Drive / Disney / Orlando areas.

We took an hours drive to Clearwater beach for a relaxing day after all the madness of queing for days of rides. That was really lovely.

I've heard that Busch Gardens is the place to go for adults who like big rides - i.e. ME! But I was at Disney with my kids. Still had loads of fun though.

We also went to Sea WOrld where was a big ride called The Kracken. That was really good - but it is far too expensive to get in there.

Have fun on your holiday! I wish I could go back right NOW.
