Hi guys, just wondering if you can give me any advice for my friends.

They are currently living in privately rented property and are having some issues with their landlord. Long story over some damage caused to the property they offered to get fixed, but landlord insisted he wanted to get it done and charge them 3x the price.

Anyway, their tenancy is due to end shortly and is looking unlikely to be renewed, and they are really worried now they will be made homeless. I have told them to try the council, but as they have 2 boys, one 18 in full time employment, one 16 just started his A levels, they are unsure if the council will help them.

Does anyone know if they would be able to get a council house? Not sure if their kids will been seen as kids in the eyes of the council? And I know it's almost impossible to get a council house without kids.

they need to contact the local authority..make an application and be graded accodingly then apply for properties. Even if they are a lower band they may still be lucky.
At least thats how warrington and st helens works
They can apply online at 'underoneroof' etc and they need to do it ASAP
#2
I very much doubt they will get one anytime soon. but they can go on the list and see how many points they will qualify for. But I will be surprised if they get many. they will just have to find somewhere else to rent.
#3
They have been looking for something else to rent privately, but are having trouble finding anything. Surely if they end up homeless the council will help them as they have children? admittedly not young children, but still dependants (well one at least, lol).
#4
Apply asap and get bidding on properties (at least that's how it's done in Stockport), also any Local housing associations also, if they are really needing to get a council place (ie low rent purposes etc), then when homeless, need to stay with friends family etc or hostel, if they just move into another private rent they will drop to bottom of pile
#5
stay where they are on dont pay rent is best
#6
they need to speak to the local council/authority and ask to speak to the housing options team they will be able to advise them if what the landlord is doing is correct and offer advice if the landlord was not to renew the tennancy if they have a tenancy contract he will need to give them notice. Priority for the family will depend on if they class the 16 year old in education still as a child. good luck to them oh if you need more advice look on the Inside Housing web site and a section they have called ask the experts

They can get the work done, but they need to ensure the workmanship is up to standard.
The landlrd may be 3 times the price because the price they got is from a local "Bodge it and scarper" merchant.

...way to get evicted and a CCJ.

Surely they can rent somewhere else, 3 adults earning a wage should have no issues paying for somewhere.
#9
obv depends on area..we dont seem to have a big shortage of housing-not necessarily nice areas but houses none-the-less.

THIS!! I was on the waiting list for nearly 6 year, gave up hope of ever getting a council house. Seems you have to be in one to get another, well that's the system round here. 3 adults working? Sorry but just rent private, you have no chance of social housing. Unless you all pop out babies soon that is,lol That seems to work, especially if they're inbred lol

or have a day trip in France and come back claiming asylum lol

just posted a link on the dropbox deal which meant people would get an extra 250MB of storage space on top of the 2GB deal. No benefit for me but against the rules so fair dos. :D

You cant just expect somewhere to live from the council if you have nowhere to go.

As said before you would expect with 3 adults in the household they could find somewhere else to live, they can go on the council list but they will be down the list.

Council housing should be there for people with no options or no choice, it does not seem that your friends fall into this category

you mean they need babies to get a home from the council? or to be out of work or ill? thats ridiculous.
If you are homeless or soon to be the council has an obligation to help...yes that may mean temp accom but they will get help.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The 18 year old is on rubbish money, surely the council won't include his money? Who would take their child's money to live off, he pays X amount a week board. Like most kids do once they are earning. He is saving to move into a shared flat with friends, so it might be that he won't even be in the equation anyway.

Only the husband works, and he isn't on great wages, maybe 15k, so this family are far from rolling in it, hence them struggling to find something else to rent, everything seems so expensive. They aren't seeking out a council house, just worried that they will be left homeless, which no one wants.

Once again, thanks for the replies guys :) xxx

Hmmm. I'm guessing that yappy little dog everyone would love to kick has been up to his usual tricks?

BTW.... I agree ....... change religion and claim asylum. Seems to be the way forward.

With all due respect chipsticks the 18 year old is a wage earning adult no matter what the money is, there are 3 adults in the household.

So if they come upon hard times the council will take his money into account as he should be contributing as a working adult, which he is, no longer a dependant.

tinks is right.....they will take his wage into account no matter how small

The 16 year old will be classed as a child still,

Not with our council, a friend was facing eviction after the home they was renting was repossessed by the bank, no fault of theirs. But her oldest lad was 16 and in year 11, however the council said for calculating the number of bedrooms they are entitled to he didn't count as he was old enough to live on his own, they do let homes to 16 year olds though but do it through a housing association/charity.

i think this post is quite difficult to answer as rules seem to differ in other areas within the UK. I know in my area they don't except 16 year olds and when they do they have to have a guarantor. Plus in some rural area properties have restrictions set on who can occupy ie local people first regardless of any real housing need, they need to speak to the Council or Local Housing Association particularly if they are going to be evicted. Remember they leaving is different to the landlord serving them notice to leave
