Might be the engine mangement computer. I had a Renault clio which had just had it's 7th birthcay and it died. Total cost of emc= £700!! The clio went soon afterward. I think that car manufacturers build in a planned obsilescence so that cars of a certain age die, so that you need a new one. How old is your car and what model is it?

put the car in gear and rock the car backwards and forwards or get a mallet and give the starter a slight knock.. take it back out of gear.. then try turning it over.. if its the starter then that should work a few times but its on its way out.. if theres clicking then its more than likely the battery.. good luck
#3
If the clicking is inside the car machine gun style then dead battery, if it's coming from the engine bay see post #3.
#4
buy a moped with points
#5
Just sounds like a loose battery lead ,Give it a wiggle and see.
#6
Sounds like a bad earth connection – disconnect battery terminals one at a time, clean with sand paper or wire brush and reconnect making sure terminals are tight. let us know how you get on!
#7
Battery is dead, jump start it then run it for half an hour.

Unless you left lights on etc it may indicate your battery is kaput and not holding it's charge. In which case you may need a new battery.

If your battery light comes on whilst driving this indicates your alternator is knackered.

COULD BE ALTERNATOR AS STARTER MOTOR IS CLICKING Sorry about caps left them on by mistake lol
#9
If it was the battery then surely the dashboard lights, stereo etc would just fade away! They all stay on ok. Now the question is where is the starter motor (in terms off position in the engine?). Sorry i dont know much about cars. BTW i have Mazda RX8.

Alternator has nothing do you with starting your car other than the fact that it may not be charging the battery.

You wanna expert oppinion?

Its broken!!!
#12
As shengis asked is it like a quick fire clicking or just one click?

Put your headlights on full beam and see if they dim.

Not strictly true as the +V lead usually goes battery>alternator>starter, so a loose terminal on any of those could give the ops symptoms.

Its a constant clicking.

Another reason why i dont think it is the battery is because they car was fine yesterday. No lights where left on yesterday

Had the same problem with my car just a couple of months ago and it was the starter motor sticking. I took it apart and give it a good clean out with WD40 and all is well now. Hope you get it sorted cause it can really be a pain.:)

Jump start it and go from there.

What happens when you put the lights on?

Abz you need to listen to everyones advice above and figure out what is wrong with it.

Why are you trying to find the starter motor, there are a list if ideas to check in the posts above before you get that involved.

Sometimes car batteries just fail.

It'll be battery I reckon - you'd be mad to try anything before confirming the battery is ok.

Also remember that the battery being able to power the interior light etc, does not mean its able to turn the starter, and fire a good quality spark.
#25
Ok so let me get this right,

Firstly i need to check try jump starting the car, if that fails check the battery connections, if that fails knock the starter motor, if that fails jump out the building!!!!
#26
I would say it is more likely to be the battery than anything else. How old is the car? How old is the battery? Do you use the car mainly on short runs etc?

Either bump start it assuming it is not an auto or take battery off and charge it then take it to local motorist shop/battery shop and let them test it.

To light the dash etc the battery will probably have no problems doing it even if quite flat but it needs nearly all the power to turn the starter motor.

If you get one of these you could check the health of the battery, if it is the battery you can get high quality branded ones less than a year old from a scrap yard for £5. Battery needs to be giving out 12v+

Put the lights on full beam and see if they dim (this will prove the battery)

Put the ignition and into gear and roll the car forward (this will unjam the starter motor, if it is jammed)

Jump starting the car will prove nothing (but it will get it going)

After you have jump started the car take it for a 30 minute run and see if it starts ok when you get back. Personally I'd drive to a place where they will check the battery for you.

Before you try anything just try wiggling the leads to the battery see if they are loose,( costs nothing)

ok just to let you all know finally got it sorted...it turned out being the starter motor...after a few knocks and shakes its started

Get a refurb from a motor factor not from a scrap yard.
