Got a dell inspiron 640m it works when it wants to. If i press the power button the power light comes on for 5 seconds then goes off. If i connect the mains adaptor the battery light comes on ok as it should and when i press the power button the power light comes on for 5 seconds then goes off with the battery light but straight away the battery light comes on again (green) as it should as the mains is plugged in. I can leave the laptop without touching it then walk up to it and press the power button it will come on. Although right now its dead and wont come on......YET.

Tried the following

REPLACED BATTERY
REPLACED BATTERY CHARGER
REMOVED BATTERY+CHARGER held down power button for 20 seconds
REMOVED ram 1 by 1
REMOVED both HDD and RAM

Any help greatly welcomed.

OR
if you have warranty, use it.
imho sounds like a mobo or cpu is boogered. Have you been using it on your lap? cos that is the best way to overheat and burn out a "lap" top.
if you have no warranty, then take it to a repair guy.

hmmm someone posted a motherboard tester which was for about a couple of quids that should help you figure out what up.

i used to have an amd athlon that started doing that. i changed the power supply but that didnt help.

seriously think either the mobo or cpu had problems..although if the cpu has problems it doesnt work at all...so me thinks something in the mobo or ram is fried.

anyway i took my pc to a car park and smashed it up with a sledgehammer (yup..i saw office space and decided thats the way to go! lol)

Girlfriends laptop just shut down when it overheated and was only after it had booted up into windows, doesn't get hot enough in BIOS in my personal opinion. Solved that by taking apart getting the caked on 1cm thick dust off the exhaust and inlet heat sinks.

This though sounds like a cracked motherboard happened to me when I threw my laptop lightly onto the bed. £105 later and I had bought a new motherboard urgh laptop was only worth £200 at most ;-)

I could get it to start by putting pressure over the CD ROM drive area but when I let go it would just shut off, replaced the motherboard myself

tell me about it!
Surley it's against trading standards to refer to these things as laptops?
I reckon I have killed several over the years simply from putting them on my lap, I have since invested in some hi grade marine ply, cut to same size as base of my 3 lappy's and finished off with several coats of good varnish. i'll be damned if i'm gonna pay daft £'s for a pad to put on my lap and which won't fit into my laptop bag.
