hi all i will be mating my dog up next month and i have just been looking on the internet for supplies but with not much look i will be needing.
drymats that go in the bottom of the whelping box plus need to know where i can get the rails for inside the whelping box to stop them getting squashed by mum.
also she is a large breed so everything has to be huge lol.

also if anybody else has some advice then feel free to have your input.
this will be my first time breeding. but my mum has plenty of experience but hasnt done it for at least 15 years now.

hi there i breed pugs and lhasa apsos so can offer some advice, you'll need to get some vet beds which keep puppies warm and dry, a heat pad for nightime and for when pups are just born as they will need to be near heat while mum carries on having the rest of the litter. why not use brush shafts they are easy to get and serve the job well?
anything else just ask

well i guess my main question is where do i start looking for these items. also my other problem is because she is so big (newfoundland) its very hard finding everything in xl.i have seen some heat pads on ebay but they are not large enough for what i would need.

I don't know why mating makes me queasy.

I don't like seeing dogs doing it either.

Get well soon x x

vet beds come in all sizes so you will get some for your puppies, you'll need a few as they get dirty. look at petmeds and petplanet.
heatpads should not be too small they come in lots of sizes.
you'll need loads of newspapers so best to start saving them early too

be very organised and do loads of research before you actually get her mated , make sure the market is there for puppies the last thing you want is to be left with puppies

i have been looking into it for the past 12 months there is a market for newfies but there is never a massive amount of people selling them you tend to find people really do travel far and wide for them plus i also think its the breeders that keep there dogs in poor conditions and charge through the roof for them that end up being stuck with them after 8 weeks. i think its the same with any large dog i would say there is more of a market for the smaller breeds.

have you got a kc reg bitch?
have you thought of joining accredited breeders scheme?
i'm a member and never advertise pups for sale, word of mouth and on kc website acc breeders go to top of sellers list so easy to sell from there and only genuine buyers look at the kc, they know they will get quality or they should!!
i have a list for both my pug and lhasa pups for their next litters, people will wait for quality

I bought my last lot of vet bed from The Bedding Box (google them). They sell it by the roll or in large pieces. Your main problem with such a large breed will be fitting the pieces in the washing machine!

The whelping box rails will depend on what type of whelping box you have. If you're handy at DIY you can probably make some up yourself with brackets and wooden rails from a DIY shop. Make sure you fit them at the right height though. If they're too high the bitch will manage to get her bum under them which defeats the object of having them.

I've never used the heat pads. I've just ensured that the central heating in the puppy room is nice and warm and all of my litters have done just fine although if you're going to be keeping them outside you will need a good heating source.

Hope you have lots of room for the litter. Lots of Newfoundlands at 8 weeks are going to take up lots of room and make lots of mess!

A good book that explains lots of things is The Book Of The Bitch

Have fun!
