once you have installed windows via bootcamp it will be fine, time consuming process, but not that difficult
[mod]#2
infeted14, I've moved this out of FS/T & into MISC as it doesn't appear to be a trade request ? Apologies if I'm wrong.
#3
yea it aint a FOR SALE one cheers! so my mac specs are more than enough to run bootcamp and coh?? also do u use it with a mac?? and what mac /games do u use??
#4
Yes it is very straightforward. Download bootcamp 2.1 from apple website if you don't have the latest version on your 1st OS X Leopard Disc.

The most important thing is to choose the right partition size you want the Windows (BootCamp) Partition to be as changing this once you install Windows (if you get it wrong) involves faffing around and is not so straightforward.

your specs are fine.

thats the thing, i am waiting for the disks to be returned, i partitioned the drive ok, is it best to run games on imac or mabook pro as i have both, also will i need to download updates once windows is installed??
#7
I play Team Fortress 2 and Counter Strike: Source on bootcamp on my mbp.
Not on full settings obviously but knock em down and you'll easily get enough fps to play.
I also use a cut down version of XP on bootcamp so that it takes a lot less space on my HD and runs faster.
You will need to run updates if your games require the updates which most likely they will.
#8
ok dude, right well when i installed xp on my imac, i couldnt use the WIFI , which i needed, so if i plug my new mbpro - its ex demo older one, but intel core 2 duo 2.4ghz i think, i can download using cable cant i? also how can i find out what updates i need??? how do u run a cut down versio?
#9
you have to use the osx install discs to update as well.there should have been a message on screen after install to tell you to do this
#10
When you start bootcamp it'll tell you that you need to make a disc to insert after you've installed windows (this might have changed to just inserting the Leopard disc now).
So when windows has installed fully, you insert the disc while booted in windows and it will install drivers so that windows will recognise all the peripherals in your mac eg. the wifi card, bluetooth module, trackpad etc.
Without the drivers installed windows will have problems using the peripherals. This might explain why you couldn't get the wifi working on your imac.
I've had no problems getting my wifi working on my mbp on windows.

Assuming your mac pro is new then it has the 9600M GT, this is a low-end card but a reasonable one and should allow you to run the games, especially if you've got the 15" MBP with it's lower resolution.

cheers everyone, very helpful i have got the older silver macbook pro, ex demo 4gb ram for 900 quid! cant wait till it gets here!!
#13

The CPU and the ram aren't the most important factor for gaming, it's the graphics chip that makes the most difference so without knowing what that is it's hard to say.

The iMac certainly had the potential to be better since ATI has included some mid-range graphics on some models.

Dawn Of War is about five years old, and that should work okay-ish. Company Of Heroes though, you might be able to get away with a reasonable frame rate at the lowest settings if you're lucky, but, well, this is how it performs on various graphics cards -

http://img.tomshardware.com/us/2007/10/09/directx_10_shootout/11-chart_coh_1024_trilinear.png

1024*768 with no FSAA is the lowest resolution THG runs it at, but they do have the game set to the Ultra settings for effects and texture quality and everything. The lowest settings might be playable, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope. Unfortunately, Apple just don't make good gaming systems. They're beancounters. Yes, they could've put a decent GPU in your laptop (which is all that is needed to turn a powerful system into a powerful system that can play games), but then, it would've taken £50 out of their profit margin, and that's all Apple really cares about.

If gaming is something you're interested in, and if you've no pressing need to get a Mac above a Windows based system, I think you should consider refusing delivery, getting a refund, and buying something else. I know it sucks and that it's a let down, but that MBP really is a dog in terms of video performance.

cant do that mate, dont trust windows for my work at all, i am a film composer, and student, so windows couldnt handle what i need i tto really! also much music software is apple only, only wanted windows to play a few games, dont wanna buy a whole new system, i think the macbook pro has a better graphics card, even tho many people have said the game works fine on their mac book pro

Yeah, the Macbook pro is your best bet, the 9600M GT is about 50-100% faster than the 2400XT. See this review for example (the 9600M GT should have similar performance to the 8600GT.)

The review I linked showed a comparable card playing company of heroes on high graphical settings so you shouldn't have a problem.

You will need at least the latest Service pack and version of DirectX for windows if you plan to run games, you'll also want to download all the other updates if you plan to have it connected to the internet.

ah rite, will it be easy to find? as i will be using ethernet cable, i usually use wifi u see, so not over sure on how to connect with ethernet on windows!!

If you're installing Vista then it'll probably pop up a balloon in the bottom left that you can click on to download and install updates, if that doesn't come up then just open the control panel and hit 'check for updates'. If you're installing XP then the Windows Update link is at the top of the start menu.
