Any good monopoly players out there?

My boyfriend and I have been playing monopoly lately but he is on a winning streak!

Any tips?! What property's best to get hold of? etc etc.

I usually head for the corner over by free parking- apartments etc not too pricey and can get a hefty rent if landed on.

We are playing the Here and Now UK version but all editions pretty much the same.

He's defo cheatin you then. Unless he's really lucky 3 times in a row going round the board to land on different ones each time then to go round again to build houses then hotels without you actually buying one.

For every colour he buys, you buy one. That way it will make it more difficult for him....

^^ Hehe.

Anyway, yeah... if you get the greens or the blues with hotels on then you can wipe out a competitor in a couple of lands... but obviously the blues only have two properties, so it's less likely that they'll land on them.

The stations can be worthwhile if you get 3 or 4 of them, as they then get you £100 or £200 rent when they land on any station on the traditional board, which is quite high.

Utilities aren't much use, especially if you don't have both of them.

The second set of properties on all four sides of the board is a better investment. One reason: houses and hotels cost the same to build as for the first set of properties, but the rent is higher.

The orange ones aren't too bad to own because they're very easy to land on when coming out of jail, which is quite likely.

Also, in the early stages of the game, get out of jail as soon as possible (even if you have to pay £50) because you'll want to get buying up properties nice and quickly!! Later on in the game, when there's lots of nasty hotels to land on, try to stay in jail as long as possible whilst your opponent goes around landing on your stuff and you rake in the rent!!

No, no I'm buying properties too, but my streak of oranges and yellows don't touch the sides at a couple of mil each rent when he's got the big blues.

He also got lucky rolling on a hefty free parking bonus.

The game took us a while, it wasn't like he won in 4 rounds of the board or anything, just been wondering which colours are the best to get etc.

some good tips coming out tho

In the junior version, aren't the prices when you land on things in £1, £2, etc rather than in £100, £150 like on the actual board? :giggle:

Might be worth playing that one for real money...

Also, it's worth pointing out that, unless you can REALLY afford it, it's not really worth getting more than 3 houses on a property as the increase in rent isn't proportionate to the price of the 4th house and/or hotel...

So...let me get this straight....you let the kid play the game....tease him with the outcome, this causes him to break his temper, so you punish him by not letting him play?.......

You dont happen to own a set of ThumbScrews as well do you? :w00t: lol

tease him with the outcome? not sure what you mean? He has won games off his own back and we let him win games, as the games only last from 10 mins to half hours we dont just play one game

Not really a big Monopoly person.

Did play a game of Risk against all my family recently that went a bit weird with several of them forming an alliance to try and prevent my taking over the (game) world. :-D
#25
Buy all the property that you can, except only one station and one utility and build on the first set that you complete. People usually win if they have the Park lane /Mayfair ones.

I always thought that when you was in jail you couldnt collect rent off your propertys?

Might just be me not thinking straight but thats the way me and my sister always played it.

You can still collect rent from jail. However there are many variations and family rules that different people play so maybe that is just one of yours. I like putting all fines in a pot and give it to anyone who lands on free parking. That can give you quite a boost.

As for good properties to buy, getting all the stations is a good strategy particularly early on in the game. And I also suggest the colours after the jail corner as being more likely to get rental income so if you get the chance Orange, then Pink, then Red are your best bet for catching people coming out of jail.
#28
get a full house if possible, and a few properties dotted on every straight row. oh the utilities are a bonus but only if you own more than 2. i win all the time.
#29
My hints:
a) The orange houses as well as the red houses are pretty neat to own, since once the opponent is in jail, he is in a very high chance to get in your killer zone as they are the highest probability to land on.
b) Red houses again, notably Illionos Avenue (or something like that) since community chests can force your opponent to land on them
c) speaking of which, the community chest can also slap bang the opponent on other areas of the map, like one of the blues.
d) railways are nice, get them while you can.
e) On the other hand, utilities are rubbish!
f)the light blue ones are pretty cool too, since some cards get opponent to go to GO place, then again, high chance of landin (and cheap too)
f) Know when to mortgage!!! If you have 2 blocks on a certain colour, you don't have any money to buy yet you have a chance of landing on the 3rd one, mortgage to get the money (dont worry about rent as rent is rubbish)
Also, likewise, if the opponent has a 3rd one likely for him to land on but he doesn't have any money even by mortgage, you must have more money than him (i don't think you can mortgage while bidding). It also pays to mortgage your solo properties to make more houses on colours if your opponents next move has a high probability of landing on your coloured areas.
g) this game is about probability, so if you are on the advantage, do NOT give your opponent a chance, as it takes one false move to turn the tide.

anyone notice the bank notes are rubbish quality unlike the old one ...
#31
I always go for Mayfair & Park Lane...and then putting on houses & hotels. It good to see someone weep when they need to pay you thousands!
In the meantime, I tend to go for the Yellow & Red...and maybe the stations...

Are you sure you are not playing poker?

oh the utilities are a bonus but only if you own more than 2. i win all the time.

There are only two utilities so how can you own more than two?
#33
lol i mean full set of one colour. utilties & railways are the bonus.

lol i haven't played on it for some time. Just googled up and thats the street that i found. Not saying my hints are professional, or helpful, but there you have it. I say "something like that" since im not sure.

the fact that you quoted "your" had bugged me all evening, till last minute when i figured out that you might be assuming that i stole "my" hints from the internet. Wow that took me sum time. I stress that they are genuinely my hints :D
