I'm clued up about jewellery, so ask me anything you want for advise, as I used to sell diamond jewellery not too long ago. :)

My friend and I went shopping for an engagement ring only last week and most of the little independant jewellery stores were having a 50% sale on a selection of engagement rings.
After checking several for an idea of how much it would cost, we checked out Argos and you wouldn't believe how lifeless the diamond was, as it had no sparkle whatsoever and that's under lighting. :O

What style of ring are you looking for and what's your budget and I could give you some advice.

It depends where you get the ring valued but most jewellers fluctuate the valuation for insurance purposes.

My brother purchased a beautiful 0.75ct VS1 and F colour diamond (he picked the loose stone himself for higher quality purposes) platinum engagement ring for about £2,400 and Goldsmiths were selling the exact same ring with slightly worse specs for £6,000.
The jeweller in Hatton Garden (that's where all the independant jewellers buy their stock but they keep the very best for themselves) valued it at about £3,500 but it's definitely worth more than that.

As you can see, the valuation completely depends from store to store.

Here's the ring at Goldsmiths but they're selling it with VS (which is most likely VS2 since they're not stating if it's 1 or 2) and G/H colour while my bros diamond is a F colour.

I've just had a look at DiamondOcean after your recommendation and it seems they're excellent value for multistone rings but they're not so great with single stone solitaire rings at all.

They're using the absolute worst stone quality that I would recommend for an engagement ring, which is SI2 clarity and H colour diamonds and that seems to be the case with every ring I checked.

If you're not clued up about jewellery, then your gf/wife to be will never know the difference but if she ever compares her ring with someone that has a high quality diamond, she'll really notice a difference.

My friend bought his ring for £375 last week and I found the same ring with a slightly bigger diamond (only 0.04ct bigger) for £489 at Diamond Ocean.

My recommendation would be to checkout some prices and designs that you like from the site and then pop down to your independant highstreet jewellers and attempt to barter with them for their sale products.

Remember that with the current economical climate, jewellery is an unnecessary luxury, so they'll be desperate for sales, as christmas and valentines day are 2 of there busiest periods and most of them started sales before christmas.

EDIT: Oh.....and by the way....most jewellers are just middlemen that don't have a clue about diamonds, so be careful with the advice they hand out, as the entire staff at the jewellery store were trying to tell me that SI diamonds are the highest quality and better than VS clarity, whereas SI is actually one of the worst but at an acceptable level. lol
They also tried to tell me H comes before G, so the colour is also better.......I swear these people don't know their alphabets. :giggle:

They only calmed down after I insisted I knew what I was talking about because I'm in the industry and the rubbish chart they pulled out was completely wrong and I could prove it.

Aaaah how romantic: I love you, as long as it's discounted! ;-)

I bought an engagement ring for the good lady for Christmas (she said yes!) and I got it from Beaverbrooks. For every £300 you spend you get a £100 voucher to spend before Feb, so as well as a ring she got a few hundred quid to spend on herself in there as well.

Everyone's a winner.

But of course......cos that's when they're worth every penny. :p

That's fantastic but also bare in mind the price of their jewellery, as the mark up is anywhere upto 600% on a single piece of jewellery at most jewellery stores. :)

Either way, I'm sure your Mrs to be was very excited at having loads of spend on anything of her choice on top of her very special christmas present. :)

Congratulations mate and I hope you two have a long and happy marriage.

if you can, pay a visit to jewelery quarter in birmingham, or there is one in london too. i get 30% off at H Samuel but that still wasnt as competitive as jewelery quarter. :)
good luck

Sorry about that mate....I have a lot of PMs that I don't want to delete for sentimental reasons. :)
I've just PM'd you back though and you can catch me on MSN at the ad I provided or if you don't have MSN, you can always email me there as well. :)

It sounds like you purchased a trilogy ring, with the central stone being slightly bigger than the 2 sidestones, which is a very nice and quite modern design. :)

Anyway, I can speak to you more about your issue in the PM over MSN and get it sorted out asap before they make any alterations. :)

EDIT: I just noticed you're no longer online, so you probably won't get to see the PM but I would contact the jeweller to confirm the total carat weight, as the site for the identical ring and model number has different specs.
Some members of staff aren't clued up about jewellery but I doubt they did get the specs wrong, as it's normally provided for them....are they going to provide you with a certificate and did you ask about the diamond quality?

If it is the same specs as the ring stated on their site, I would recommend cancelling the order and ordering it online but don't forget to use the 25% vouchercode and Quidco, which would mean the ring would cost just under £300 in total.

I hope that helps but if you do see this message while I'm around today, I would be more than happy to help out but you need to get this handled before they start resizing, otherwise they'll hold you to your order.
