Any Heating Engineers Plumbers on here? Advice required!

makershakermakershaker

Hi, Noticed on one of my Radiators in the bedroom that theres a small leak coming from the TRV valve on the Rad.

Its only a tiny drip here and there that seems to come and go (i guess when i put the heating on it starts). The drip is coming from around the Knurled silver ring right under the Thermostat control. The silver ring was very loose so i tightened it up but can still feel it wet occasionally.

Whats the likey cause here?

i am not a heating engineer or a plumber but i can tell you the tvr is broke and needs replacing. :3

The silver ring only holds the actual trv sensor on (the plastic bit), this can be removed with out draining and is usually only hand tight, so it won't be leaking from the actual ring, more than likely leaking arond the pin that comes out of the valve, you can't repair that so it's a new valve, simple job to replace :)

how much we talking for a heating engineer to do that?

Also would that be whats causing a slight pressure drop on my new boiler?

Not sure how much they will charge as the radiators will probably have to be bled to do it but I wouldn't have thought it was a high charge. Yes that will explain the pressure drop. For now keep an eye on your pressure as if it drops too low the boiler will shut off and wont heat water either then. There should be a top up valve you can use to add more in but only do enough to keep it at about 1Bar (ish) as the more pressure you add the more will come out of the leak.

The parts aren't expensive so it's just a case of draining the system (might be able to just lock off the valve the other side of the radiator depending where the TVR is fitted) and then just straight replacement and blead that radiator once ya add water back in. Shouldn't cost much as I mentioned but I don't know myself.

Can i not take off the plastic thermostat cover and somehow try to tighten anything before i phone for a plumber?

I dunno if you can do that. Others have said it's probably a fault and not just loose but ya never know. Just don't snap the valve or anything that causes water to go everywhere. :p

If you do choose to try to tighen it try to make sure you don't twist the whole thing on the piping either otherwise ya may end up with bigger problems.

Don't copy that video - it is pretty shocking, not a good advert for their services.
