FF do you have a train station near to you that you could visit. I was trying to book tickets online to London for my mum a while back and they were coming up at £180 return. She went to the station and asked at the ticket office for the cheapest fare and got it for £20 return. Its worth a try

If you go from London to York and then york to Durham you can get £76.50 return each(£153). Eg
leaving 9th September: KGX 11.27 arrive in York 13.19
leave york 13.54 arrive in Durham 14.50

returning 11th September Durham 12.27 arrive in york 13.24
leave york 14.10 arrive london 16.05

Even cheaper if you go via Sheffield - but longer travelling time.

Thanks for all your help . this is what I have done
Journey: 1 Durham to London Kings Cross @ £140.40
ADVANCE £27.90 (1 @ £27.90)
With 1 Senior railcard(s) (dad) Going
ADVANCE £42.30 (1 @ £42.30) (ME) Going
ADVANCE £27.90 (1 @ £27.90) (dad) Return
With 1 Senior railcard(s)
ADVANCE £42.30 (1 @ £42.30) (ME) Return

Means dad will have to go and get a rail card for £24.00 from Durham Station.. so total journey will be £164.00 instead of £198

Also he of course will get cheaper travel for the next year and lets face it he will be going down to London again for the funderal
