Any idea what the penalty is for doing 55 in a 40?

Went paintballing this afternoon and was driving back on the A419 from Swindon towards Cirencester and noticed there were a couple of speed cameras (or white lines on the road with the speed camera signs up) as they're building a new dual carriageway.

Unfortunately I still had a lot of adrenaline flowing and stupidly bombed it down the right hand lane slamming the anchors on each time I saw the white lines on the road. Trouble was it was very dark and I didn't see the lines until I was just before it and I couldn't brake as hard as I had wished because I was concious of cars behind me. I naively thought the cameras would be out of use but I think that's just in and around Swindon.

Having said all that, if I get a ticket, I bet I wasn't the only one. There were plenty of people going just as fast as me in the right hand lane. I don't normally drive like a dick but I put my hands up tonight. Generally I obey the speed limits but I find it so difficult to do less than 55 on the motorway / dual carriageways, especially when everyone else is doing at least that.

yep 3 points and a fixed penalty notice.

Some places offer the learinig day but I think that is for higher speeds, my brother got away with no points but had to pay over £100 for the course, not available in my area (Essex). Here is three points and £60 - £90 fine.
He was on the M1.

I bet they still put the penalty points on your license as well and send the fine to the family once they stone the driver to death :whistling:

Not that I could see. Though my windows were fogged up and there were lots of lights from the other cars behind me.

Doubt I'll be offered that, neither of my parents were offered that for doing the same thing (exceeding reduced speed limit on a dual carriageway because of road works). Just been through confused.com and it looks like the 3 points are only going to cost me an extra £80 next year from £500 to £580 (fully comp + no excess).

TBH I'm hoping for one of two things:

1) The cameras were out of use (either because Swindon council had covered them or were out of film or non existent, e.g. just white lines of road / no camera)

2) I had slowed down sufficiently though I doubt I slowed down soon enough

I have set off some local cameras loads of times doing 33 in a 30 and never received a ticket, touch wood! So hopefully I'll be lucky again. How long do they take to come through nowadays?

I think some districts set them to the limit + 10%, which means 33 may have been OK to not set it off?

Well when I say set it off, I mean it flashed at me once. Apparently it's the second flash that means you got caught and I've never had the local ones flash twice at me (except on one occasion when an ambulance over took me as I pulled over by the speed camera).

You can't get done for one flash. You need 2 pics to show how far you've gone and therefore what speed you were doing between the pics.

I hope they lock you up and throw away the key - I am a cyclist that regularly does 30mph on roads and I always get total morons wanting to show off by breaking the speed limit to get past me....... I think capital punishment should be brought back TBH lol

sadly this is the penalty

As I say I never been done for doing 33 in a 30 but anyway, at least we pay road tax.

I wish the cyclists round town did 30mph, they all seem to go about 10-12mph. You ride for GB or something?

In that case, the good news is that there is zero chance of 6 points and 2 fines...

bad news is that I am definitely up for getting 3 points and a fine. You sure they didn't remove both cameras as part of the Swindon Council removal of speed cameras thing?

and yes I hate the new road as well, my TomTom gets all confused too

Ermmm the new cameras use a infra-red flash so you wouldn't notice it flashing anyways.

I really hope so!! It would certainly explain why so many people do 50-55 along there.

Well I've been flashed before (see above) and I think I would have noticed but then again my windows were fogged up. Magicbeans seems to think the infra-red flash wouldn't be visible anyway though? How long I got before I find out anyway, 2 weeks?

acecatcher3
just say it was ur wife driving...then if she complains jus tell her that if she loves u she will take the blame.

You sound like my dad, he did that very thing to my mum but it went horribly wrong and they both ended up with points, further fines and a court hearing lol (apparently lying to the police is a crime). However, I'm not married and it would be hypocritical of me to do that as my g/f knows I wouldn't dream of letting her drive my car and neither of us have any points (yet :whistling:).

So, not only were you speeding, you couldn't see where you were going at the time, glad I don't live near to you.

If you get away with this one, I bet it will not be long before you do get caught.
#37
Let us know how you get on, it takes about three weeks. If its not an ultra modern one, they do run out of film!!
Keeping everything crossed.

these are very rare ! about 20% of council's use them and then only a small number at that ! also these a nearly always used facing the traffic , so they can take a picture of the driver !

also if you dont want to get caught make sure your doing over 170mph lol

Actually, I could clearly see where I was going (I regularly keep my windscreen nice and clean). I admit the rear windscreen was fogged up but I could still use my side mirrors fine. Normally I would use the rear heated windscreen but I prefer them to be a bit fogged up as it reduces dazzling from other peoples' headlights which seem all too bright nowadays. Also, you imply that doing 55 in a 40 makes me an unsafe driver. As a member of the IAM I do feel that I am in fact a safer driver than your average driver. I tried to explain that the adrenaline rush was causing me to drive faster than usual and that speeding it is not something I normally do. 55 in a 40 when in normal situations is a 70 is hardly excessive either. I know I'm not alone as most other drivers were doing similar speeds.

What makes you think it won't be long before I am caught?
