Maybe the "shadow" isn't a shadow, but painted on?
(maybe backed up yo the letters on the "shadow" all being very clear when not visible on metal bars)

Maybe wall is made of paper and metal bars extend through and match other side and the light is also the other side? if that makes any sense?

Something to do with the angle of the light -it's coming from above....

This ^^^^

Looks like the light is from high left to me. Still doesn't explain it totally though

My brain hurts. I don't think the hand is where you are made to think it is. It's more to the side and closer to the wall.

Second glance, it looks to me like the bar hanging thing could be double sided, with the other side perfectly identical. Assume the wall is a thin piece of paper, if a light was shone down from the other side, you would see the shadow of the other half, not the near half. It does appear to be going through the wall if you look at where it joins - there's a bright bit where the light can shine straight through.

Wouldnt the letters be back to front then though? Unless on the object the letters are back to front.

I think the clue's in the lettering. They appear on the wall perfectly straight, which would require a direct frontal light to make happen. That would mean some illumination of the central bar, which you can see there is in darkness, as are the rest of the hangers. I think Muddyboot's on the money with his back-side theory.

I hadn't seen muddyboots' theory when I posted - that's what I was trying to say.

Maybe the "shadow" effect is just painted on the wall???

Edit - hadn't realised RichD had already said this.....

If you look at the bar on the right hand side there is a tiny light spot which appears to be a hole from which the bar is sticking out from.

Ya think it could be two light-souces of differing brightness? One from up top and another from underneath?
#15
If there is a light, it's coming from behind the wall - there's no light shining on the bars (or the hand) in the foreground....

Where was this originally posted?

Hand is actually flat against the wall?

Double-exposure or long exposure with flash with hand quickly removed?
#18
Seems like a trick as the 'keys' on the front part have the 'wire going into the centre of the back of them, yet the shadow appears to be suspended from the top of the 'keys'. There is no way a letter would be seen if the wire went into the back of them. (that probably makes no sense whatsoever apart from me)

the light source is the watch which is positioned behind the hand but in front of the bars, hence no shadow from hand!

Some of you guessed it right.

The image may be formed, as others have said, by an identical metal construction on the other side of an opaque (paper) surface. That would explain the absence of shadows on the hand.

Or it could be that the "shadow" is painted on.

I think it's painted on.

Look at the right hand side.

The shadow shows 3D rendering of the square support.

A real shadow wouldn't.

Also at the point of attachment of the middle "typewriter key" the shadow is darker.

Look at the shadow on the wall to the right.

A shadow, meant to be of the arm, is painted just above the arm, but what is it attached to Barrel Boy?
