Any ideas on how to get a job? :S

Well, im 16, and for a long while i have been looking for some sort of job in Edinburgh. I have applied to a handful of local business, and received no reply back. I have trawled through Gumtree and the only reply i received from that was to be a Betterware supplier and I think i would probably not end up getting paid anyway!

I don't know what else to do, does anybody have any tips or suggestions on how to move forward?

Be persistent. If you dont get a reply phone them. Ask if they have recieved your application? Check the closing date for the positions. I often find face to face is better, they cant fob you off with ****.
Its not easy at mo, my partner is a student and needs a voluntary placment. No-one has anything!!!!?? he is offering to work for free!! Hang in there something will come along!!

Target your application to the specific job. Look at the job advert and for example, if they ask for "good customer service skills" make sure that you hilight something that you have done that demonstrates that skill. Repeat for as many of the aspects of the job as you can and that should at least buy you through to the interview stage.
Do not under any circumstances copy and paste info into sections of the application - it's obvious and I've already binned 40 applications this week for this. Interviewers like to see that someone has actually thought about their application and taken the time to tailor it to that particular post.
Use the spell checker!
Finally, keep trying and good luck.

All I can say is that finding a job in this day and age takes a while
I used to think finding a job is easy - hand a few cv's out and then get a reply in a week - interview - job - WONT WORK LIKE THAT IM AFRAID !

What i would recommend to you is do what i did - join a temping agency - do that for a while while applying elsewhere and then when you get another job thats more your thing just leave

I found bulk handing out cv's the biggest waste of time as they dont know who you are - face to paper - put yourself out there they say - well unless those cv's are handed direct to the manager of the store its going to get misplaced - Go into a shop and ask to see the manager - he/she comes down enquire about a position if declined hand a cv and ask for contact if any positions come up

Shows innitiative and lets the manager show that you want a job and who you are not just a piece of paper but a person looking for a job

Jobcentreplus is a good site to check daily but good paid jobs are hard to come by on there as they are snapped up by the other 2million unemployed

1 - Polish your CV - take out the meaningless rubbish or put some in :-D
2. Do a weekly drop around the town or local businesses - be presentable not a hoody and jeans
3. Online searching bi-daily
4.Register your local temping agency
5. Could take up to 6 months so enjoy the free time - dont get too depressed got 30+ years to look forward to

Im only 21 but still when i was 16 i was unemployed - got a 2month temp at woolworths- left that and looked again - 5 years later and im on 26 grand a year but still far away from what i will be earning in the future :-D

Keep at it !

I'll add to that.

When I was younger and struggling for work, I joined up with a temping agency. Because I had few skills (other than retail) they wouldn't really give me much time.

Once I'd turned up every morning at 8am and waited in the office until lunchtime, after about a week or so they "found" me jobs (that had previously not existed).

Depends how much you want a job, but if you really want one, then you have to be persistent.

If I'm totally honest though, I'd recommend going back to college if even only part time and getting yourself some skills. As someone else pointed out, it's a dog-eat-dog world out there.

It's all about handing out CV's... although that did get me working in Jimmy Spices for £3.53 an hour a few years ago which sucked. But then underpaid me by 17p so they got charged £100 haha!

My advice still stands as above.

I used to do it whilst at Uni too between semesters
