They say it's different?! Something about flashing images or something!
Hand eye coordination could be a good point to raise?

He is 8 and actually his hand eye coordination could do with some work ;)

Ahh, that'll be it then. You don't get any flashing images on normal tv do you?
I'd just ignore it. It'll save you having to make sure he's not on it while they're at yours.
Ah, I get on very well with the in laws (even though they have their little quirks) but he never stays there... He says it's too boring cause there's no videogames!
in fact i would encourage most youngsters to do an hour a day on a game that requires high eye and hand co-ordination (think sonic or streetfighter) it will help them adjust to their constantly changing dimensions.

Show him some porn. I think that'll improve that. (Though it might be bad for his eyes also and make him go blind!) X)
It's not worth debating things like this with people anyway, people have their opinion of how things are and 99% will never accept anything to the contrary unless they read it in a newspaper or see it on TV. I just tend to 'agree' with people using the same tired old 'I don't really care what you are saying' nod and then do what I want to anyway... unless they have a good point.

Most people think violence in TV/Books = Fine. Violence in video games = future Fred West.
I'm living proof really, been playing video games since I was 4 years old (I was addicted as a kid) and I have perfect visio last year confirmed by my optician at my last check up.
Mind he'll get eye strain if he sits close to the screen like it's a computer monitor.
Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), a condition marked by a variety of symptoms including "eye irritation, dry eyes, headaches, pain in the eyes or surrounding facial muscles, squinting, excessive blinking, increased sensitivity to light and difficulty focusing."
.
Alas, CVS is caused by strain from constant eye movements, often due to long hours in front of a monitor or television screen. By way of lengthy gaming sessions, gamers in particular are susceptible to developing problems, but non-gamers should also be wary of how long they watch. A survey by the American Optometric Association found that 82 percent of Americans frequently work at a computer and that 41 percent of its respondents have suffered from eyestrain.
