Any long time Mac users available?

Evenin all,

I'm a PC user...BSc in Computing, long term work in IT...

Anyways, decided I need to get some mac skills, so purchased a G3 iBook to have a go with. I've got an OS 9 disk but don't have a clue how to get the mac to boot from disk. Anyways, any help appreciated. I will give more info if there's anyone replying!

I feel so stupid and can't ask any of my peers for help! My best friend has been google so far, but really need a one on one with someone

Personally I wouldn't recommend starting with OS 9! It's an outdated OS now that OSX has been out for what? 6 years? and it does not share much if anything in common - it's like going from Windows 3.1 to 95.

Anyway, if you hold down the C key while starting up it should boot from disc.

Edit: Here's a shortcut list for OS 8/9. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58068

I'm thinking of getting a mac mini - is it hugely different from a PC? I don't want to get it and then find i ain't a clue what to do...

the reason I got OS9 is because there's no DVD drive yet. so I could only get CDs of OS9. I thought at least I could get the computer up and running, make sure everything works then get OS X. Holding down the C key doesn't seem to work. I just get the folder icon in the centre of the screen

Is it a folder icon with a question mark?

yeah, and the old school mac picture with the faces

It's different but that doesn't mean you should be lost on it! You operate your mobile phone and it doesn't run Windows (probably) :)

Hmm that means it can't find any media to read from. Is it possible the cd drive is broken?
#8
quite possible! Can I boot from a USB stick
[admin]#9
I don't think so. Do you have another mac handy? You should be able to boot up in target disc mode (hold down T while booting) this turns your mac into an external drive - then you could dump a live copy of os 9 on I guess...or maybe a network boot? Do you have an external drive?

Which laptop do you have by the way?

Here's the help page for your problem by the way:

Cheers Paul, it's the G3 800 Dual USB model. I'm pretty sure it's just got a CD drive. I don't have another mac, just several PCs!! Is there any BIOS type stuff on a mac?
[admin]#12
I would say with that model you should run OSX not OS9 as it's easily advanced enough to run it ok (as long as you have enough ram). Is it the opaque case or white case? or what is the model number? If you check the model number then look on everymac to see if you have the dvd/cd combo or just cd. The opaque version just has cd but the other is a combo drive.

No there isn't BIOS it uses OpenFirmware which you can't access on boot - at least not that I know of.

Just thought of an idea - if you have a Firewire drive with a six pin connector you can plug that in and it will boot off of that so you could copy a cd onto a partition. I think that would work ok.

Edit: Just thinking it would have to be formatted Mac OS Extended or HFS+

Cheers Paul, I will do a bit more research the noo

Don't have Firewire Drive, only a few USB Sticks. But then I can't format to Mac OS Extended without a Mac!!!

Looks like i'm screwed!
