i have a vectra 1.8 manual. when in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gear and at the 3,000 rev mark it sorts of holds back and sounds like a automatic. it only seems to happen when my bf is driving on full throttle. but when i drive it doesnt seem to do it. anyone know what could be wrong i have taken it to two garages and they want £45-£50 just to take a look at it. but if it is only something simple it would be a waste to pay it. thanks in advance

its sounds a automatic car when the auto changes its gears. like that winding sound lol dont know how to describe it, the sound is like when you ride the clutch

Sounds like slipping clutch which will need replacing.

Be hard to diagnose from your post but could be clutch or a dodgy MAF, you could try disconnecting the MAF, if it runs smoother that's your problem. If you google vectra maf or vectra air flow meter it should help you find it.

I may be completley wrong but it's worth a try?

Will it not rev over 3000 or do the revs rise and the car doesn't go faster?

it will go over 3000 revs, the problem onlys seems to happen when it hits the 3000 rev mark once it goes over 3000 it drives like normal. it seems to be using more petrol aswell before was getting 35 mpg now only bout 25mpg

got a 1.8 vectra. was having probs with my gears, there had been a small oil leak for 6 months, puts some oil stop leak in it, thought it stopped it. anyways gears had probs then just totally failed. turned out it was the gearbox oil leaking , it had ran dry and killed my gearbox. cost £800 to put a new gearbox in. ....lesson learned....any problems with the motor , just fix em straight away!. last week the heaters started blowing cold , turned out to be the thermostat so spent £50 for the stat and £30 for the mechanic to do it. works fine now but the engine management light has come on today so back to him to sort it tommorrow!

my car is also using more petrol, dropping from 390 miles for a tank to 290. hopefully it was the thermostat that caused it. will find out on next fill up
