I've been to three unis. The only decent one was Plymouth. The lecturers actually encourage you to think for yourself. At my last one if you had a different political opinion they marked you down.

Lots of people really enjoy uni but it just wasn't for me. I'd have been far better off earning money for three years and moving up the career ladder rather than losing three years' earnings, getting into debt and graduating with a degree that qualifies you to do absolutely nothing. Have you looked into the career prospects with your degree? Would it make more sense to get a job in horticulture and earn money while learning and progressing with your career?

Business In Computing!!!! Its nothing special!!! :?

40+ years too late for me (but I had a great time when I was there!).

Take a bottle of scotch - great ice breaker, and PLEASE try not to live on pot noodles. There are some good books on cooking on a budget - well worth getting hold of. Cooking is a skill that will get you lots of friends and will be useful for the rest of your life.

Don't worry, you will all be in the same boat on freshers week - just enjoy it.

Have fun,

Regards,

White

go the the freshers club nights right at the start...and dont be aftraid to chat to girls. freshers is going to be the easiest time to pull in your life. by summer you will be a pro.

results dont count for much in the first year but dont neglect them too much!

try and to a summer placement in your chosen career too. very helpful when getting a grad place,

oh and join one sport and one other club. I joined karate but no ohter club... its a great way to meet new people.

first couple of sessions are free so try a few

I actually dont know any students that live off pot noodles, in fact many students seem better off than working people using designer aftershaves/perfumes, clothes from big shops like next, drinking at bar a few times a week and loads of take aways.

thats prob all on the student loans, theyre gonna have to pay it back eventually.

I'm in last year at University of Plymouth, computing and software development. I think uni is definitely worth doing. It's an extra 3 years (or more) where you can live without all the worries of the real world, lol. Loads of people i know have really changed at uni too, getting a lot more confident etc.

@imranaz - as a fellow computer science student, how do you feel your uni has set you up for a job?! i'm pretty good at Java and other OOP, not so good at server side and web programming. what are your plans?!

My daughter is just finishing her first year at Manchester, I suggest you ask/post the question
'what should I take , with me to Uni ??? early September.I posted the question on another forum last year and got very valuble advice (for my daughter)

Top of the list ( dont laugh) was ... take plenty of coat hangers. There is never enough in the halls of residence! Along with bottle opener etc

Birth Control was also mentioned , but that I was not prepared to discuss:whistling:

Good Luck . enjoy yourself

All I can say is make the most of your first year! Go absolutely crazy! Do your work in second and third year. The time goes by so quickly it's unreal. You'll meet some ace people and have an amazing time. If I could do it all over again I would, and again, and again and again...

Also, get job hunting halfway through your 3rd year (for when you leave). You'll thank yourself for it later.

What's uni like? Well let's put it this way, it's 1:45am and I'm still up writing essays for the 4th night in a row. However, that said, it's a great experience and very few people don't enjoy themselves.

If your into drinking and women, Nottingham's the place to be!

Depending on your halls, even modern buildings don't have enough sockets for all the electricals and chargers one person has these days. A few days before you go, get a few extension plugs, most DIY stores let you return them if you don't need them. We needed 3 sets for my sons room.

Storage is always useful. Found those plastic boxes on wheels, stack of 3 was excellent for storing things like kitchen stuff. Good prices at Home and Bargain or Woolies.

A clothes airer can be useful (yes you will need to wash clothes sometimes...!).

Many people might want to buy you things for Uni. Relative bought my son a good alarm clock with digital radio. Although he has MP3, he missed a radio in his room.

Bottle openers, you get loads of this free type of stuff at Freshers week.

Again depending on your digs, you might find a small portable (mini) fridge useful. Although there was a fridge in the kitchen, food often went misisng. He just used it for storing milk butter and the odd bottle of wine to impress the ladies.

Think about how you are going to keep in touch with home. May not be a priority for you but very hard for your parents. Contact once a week to let them know you are still alive is always appreciated. Do you or your parents need to change phone tariffs, maybe expensive long calls on mobiles?. We opted for skype phones because after Freshers the conversations got much longer!. We paid £6 for each phone and calls are free. But lots of tariffs may also be worth looking at.

Ah, uni. When else as an adult can you go out any night of the week, drink ridiculous amounts at ridiculously low prices, stay in bed until midday, watch neighbours twice a day, and have the best damn time of your life that you can't even remember? I miss it, I really do... You'll have a fab time :)
