My Dad has decided he wants a Nokia 6300 for his birthday, and the best deal I can find is with 02 or vodaphone, but he is with orange. I am tempted to risk it, but just wondered how easy it was. Advice/ help gratefully recieved. gmwr.

You need an official Nokia DKU-5 USB cable and Dejan's Nokia BB5 Loger & Calculator It's pretty easy :)

Phones from O2 are usually unlocked, and Vodaphone phones are unlocked or will be unlocked by vodaphone for free more info: http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=615

Its a testpoint unlock, usually about £10, dejans free software will not unlock the phone...

O2 phones are usually locked, however some do come sim free, usually on contract when they havent had a chance to brand the handset, or if you get them from CPW, etc... Vodafone will unlock the phone for free only if its on contract or over 12 months old, otherwise they will charge £15

vodafone normally unlock them for free if on contract

normlly costs a tenner down private phone shops

if you be nice and bug them they can charge less than a tenner

Vodafone will unlock it for free if you give them a call mate.

I took out a 100% cashback contract with Vodafone through Phones4U and my 6300 came fully unlocked and unbranded.

Fantastic phone too, I might add...

Except for the battery life. It sucks, oh god it sucks. You're talking about charging it every 2 days if you're lucky. You can use a Nokia BL-5C (comes with 4C) in it as it's the same voltage - only requires you 1. putting it in at a precise angle, or 2. filing the plastic part of the battery down by the contacts (more info on google).

The quoted 16.5 day (or whatever) standby life by Nokia is completly ridiculous and inaccurate.

But other than the battery I'd highly recommend it!

It would help if you let us know whether it is PAYG or contract.
Also, CPW price match, and you can ask them if the phone is unlocked before purchase.

I use one of these in my phone. I would expect it to work on a 6300

Hello everyone and thanks for your input. Saint ... your techinical knowledge never ceases to amaze me!.. Its on PAYG and tbh, I think mum has left it a little late to be buying over the internet, so shop prices it is! (aaargh!) . God knows when though! Might even have to go to town and haggle there. (not very hopeful!) Thanks once again everyone. ps Nice to know its a good phone. He really wants to be able to use it with a mobile modem.. so thats the next job... Niki:p

CPW price match on the High Street. So find the best price online, and go instore and ask them to pricematch. Have you used a 6300? I found the navigation button a bit fiddly. Not a favourite of mine.
