Can anyone tell me the benefits of this if you already have a decent operating system? All it seems to offer is google stuff which can easily be added anyway by adding the GUTIL firefox add-on. Is it just for people who want to avoid filling MS's coffers? cheers

    It depends .....

From what I can gather this new gOS is based on Linux Ubuntu distro but with a somewhat better front end shell - Enlightened its called.

Once up and running it does offer some advantages over Windows / Mac

firstly as you say its free so you can run a legal PC without paying out M$ prices
secondly it will run on a lower spec PC, so for some users this means you can get a really cheap PC and get this running for very little cost
thirdly its not so over bloated like M$ priducts so it will run faster.

Also Linux is no where near as prone to Virus attacks etc etc so security is better

So for a basic office apps / internet / email Pc this is aneat solution.

However installing additional apps / drivers can still be a bit of an art so not really from techno phobes

I will give it a go on an old PC and see how it fares

    Yep thats true

gOS apparantly stands for Good Operating System

gOS Rocket is based on the Ubuntu 7.10 distribution. It uses the Enlightenment 17 window manager instead of the usual GNOME or KDE desktops

However Google is heavily intergrated into gOS

Many of the documents created with Rocket, such as Google Docs documents, can be saved on Google servers instead of on the local hard disk, so Rocket can work with very small hard disks. In this respect a gOS Rocket PC has many similarities with a Thin client, but gOS Rocket also integrated Google Gears, which suggests that in the future the on-line google applications can be used while off-line.

Just another Linux distro, but agree with most of what Eltiom says above, although I think Ubuntu's package manager and the wide availability of open source software actually makes installing software easier than on Windows - you simply search for what you want (eg "CD burning") and a list of freely available options will be shown which can be downloaded and installed with one click...
