Just after an opinion really.

Have just come back of holiday from Spain. Whilst there my 11 year old son caught an ear infection.

Got some eardrops from the chemist but after a couple of days it hadn't cleared up and he was in a bit of pain so took him to the local hospital.

He was given an antibiotic injection in the bum. A bit painful but no problem with that.
He was then prescribed further antibiotoics to be taken twice a day. No problem with that.
He was presribed a different sort of eardrops. No problem with that.
He was also prescribe Ibruprofen. But this was 600mg tablets to be taken 3 times a day. a total of 1800mg.

We had taken some of our own Ibruprfen out with us, which were 200mg tablets and the instructions on these were two tablets up to 4 times a day for Adults and children over 12. So in an adults case only 1600mg max.

We were a bit concerned so didn't given him the pescribed Ibruprfen.

Basically my question is if anyone knows if 1800mg a day is safe for a child.

Don't want to bother them. Its all sorted now.

It was merely my own curiositry as it seemed a high quantity to be taking.

child 10–12 years, 300 mg 3 times daily (up to 30 mg/kg daily (max. 2.4 g) in 3–4 divided doses)

2.4g = 2400mg max daily dose.

You need professional advise before reducing the dose yourself-it's also an anti-inflammatory as well as a pain killer and the reason for a high dose may have been to prevent any unwanted inflammation in the ear that has sensitive cells. I would recommend your own GP or NHS Direct.

in the UAE they sell 800mg tablets over the counter and you can take 3 times a day

hospitals generally perscribe larger doses than it says on packet, i wouldn't worry too much

hope he's feeling better soon
