Normally they are part of the Air Support Unit. Don't know about other forces but often they're civilian staff, not police officers.

Very long and very hard! You'd be looking at 5-8 years service or more, by its nature armed response isn't something you can just walk in to!

You would need to be a serving police officer for two years (probation period) before being able go into a specialise field

After 2 years you become confirmed in rank as a police officer, however, every tom, dick and harriet wants to get into the 'gucci' units like armed response, so there are lots of people applying for very few places. Needless to say, those with more experience are more likely to get chosen than those with very little. It isn't a case of doing two years, then deciding that you fancy firearms, so just swan off from shift!

Sadly you also need to be able to type/spell :giggle:

Go to america????:whistling: again in any line of specialist unit you will still have to do your prob period of 2 years that includes your training then go for jobs when they come up but again you could be up against experienced officers so it could take a while....

True say, the recruitment is geared up on diversity, one wrong statement, or if anyone appears to be racist/prejudice in anyway, application gets binned

The pilot is not a police officer - but a regular helicoptor pilot, in our local force, there is a police officer on board who is known as the observer, there is also a paramedic on board as it is a joint air ambulance and police helicoptor.

as to the old bill and questions ask away I dont do msn with folk I dont know..
#24
Fire away with questions. I dont mind answering them here. The helicopter pilots are civilians here, but there are observers on board who are police officers though.
You will have to complete your 2 year probation period before applying for other posts. There arent always queues for things like CID. In fact very few people apply for CID in North Wales. Out of 2000+ officers there may be 6-7 apply
Response is considered one of the better jobs as we get to lock up the real career criminal who make everyones lives hell. I left a very cushy and well paid job to do this and after 15 years I still like to try and make some sort of difference to the decent folk on my patch. I will always put the effort in to get a result.
We have a high recruitment policy here, most of the new recruits here are well qualified academically or with life experience that they are required to evidence during interview.
It is a rewarding job. All of the stick we get is worth it when I have got a paedophile in cuffs, a burglar etc. etc. I think most people arent aware that we dont have powers to deal with everything eg. Noisy party (environmental health) lost dogs (dog warden) etc, so seem to blame us for not sorting out a particular problem. My job is quite literally sorting out oter peoples problems, as long as you understand this when you apply, you wont go far wrong

you cant put a time limit on it as its down to the person in question i know two people one who's got in and been in the job 6 years and another who cant get in and been in the job 8 years, Also if thats your only reason for joining the police i'd have a re think cause seems you only want to go around with a gun! The firearms unit is a very very hard place to get in and the tests to get in are awsome so if its what you want br prepared for a wait and some very very hard work.
#30
i am prepared to work hard to get there. so heres to hoping il get to join them in the future. any tipps of the fitnees side?
