Some more information such as budget and your requirements would be useful. The Nikon D3 is a fantastic camera but at 3300 pounds and goodness knows how heavy, I doubt it's what you're looking for...

My husband bought me Kodak easyshare Z885 for xmas. It really is superb. I am not a pro. photographer but an ex. amatuer. Easy to use, 8.1 megapixels 5x optical zoom plus 5x digital zoom. High ISO very important. The colour quality is superb.

I'd have a look at the Panasonic FX33, it's a very small camera with optical image stabilisation and more importantly a 28mm equivalent lens which means you have a wider field of view than most compact cameras. Additionally the lens at 28mm is better quality than from rivals with minimal distortion, don't just look at the zoom range you need to look at the actual focal range it spans.

The TZ3 is also worth looking at, it's a bit larger but packs a huge 10x zoom again starting at 28mm, there's a compact buyer's guide here:

http://www.cameralabs.com/buyers_guide/compacts/best_compact_digital_camera.shtml

I like the Cameralabs reviews as they include a video look round of the camera and tend to test the camera properly rather than just shoot the cameras at test studio shots and base performance on that. I'd recommend having a look round their site.

If you're looking for something a bit bigger, for the bridge cameras (the sort of mini SLRs), it's worth considering the Canon S5 IS and the Panasonic FZ18.

The Panasonic's main problem is aggressive noise reduction although these days all the pixel stuffed compacts have poor high ISO performance aside from the Fujis - the F3X series was particularly good but they're lacking in other areas.

I've been having a look around for a few weeks - son's birthday on 7th Jan and I think that you can't get an f20 any more. The fujis seem to be those coloured z10s (or something like that). Do you know if they are good?
