Any three skype phone users out there?

OK further to my previous post on getting my Parent communications sorted once they go into the home I would appreciate to some further advise / thoughts

Had a web chat with three this morning and it looks like thsi might be a good dea for them.

£12 promo tariff 100 mix and match gves them

100 cross net / landline mins
Plus
300 3 to 3 mins which they did say are used first on 3 to 3 calls which did surprise me, that way the 100 cross net calls are protected.
Plus 4000mins of skype calls

So first question I seem to remember somewhere that 3 mins in complete minute increments is this true, as this is something they must be aware of.

Also is there an easy way to check your remaining minutes on 3?

Now for the skype phone bit.

Any three skypephone users, how easy is the phone to use. How easy is it to place a skype call once the skype account is setup on the phone. Is there loads of button presses or routine to go through?

Please bear in mind that the old dears are in their mid 70s and Mum only has the use of one hand.

The skype option would be good for chatting to us. We can get ourselves setup on the pC for Skype, that shold not be a problem.

Thanks in advance for any input / thoughts / suggestions

"Also is there an easy way to check your remaining minutes on 3?"

That should be in your "My 3" bit on the 3 website.. you just need to register the phone and you can see all remaining mins/texts :)

Can someone with a phone that has 3 software check?

yeah, it's actually one of the sfotkeys on the phone, i have it by the way, so feel free to ask me any questions via pm,

the phone is easy to use, i got one, now my brother and dad have one, mum looks soon to follow. the skype is very easy to use once set up, you can either press the middle skype button to open a screen that looks exactly like skype on a computer, or you can opt to have the skype contacts integrated with normal contacts, so they would just appear in that list alongside other phone numbers.

checking free minutes is easy, just to go planet 3 - my 3 - check my useage (this is all integrated on the phone)

the 300 free 3 to 3 minutes workd well, it does indeed protect your 100 min/text limit (or 300 in my case) and is handy for when my pay as you go family run out of free skype time (which doesn't happen to contract users).

as for texting, the key layout and style etc is the same as a nokia, if that helps

the skype chat works fine, but there is about a 10-20 second delay on receiving messages, doesn't really affect it that much. my only other criticism is that sometimes it is awkward about unlocking the keypad (though my family doesn't experience this) and that there isn't a £ sign in the punctuation

hope this helps - gav

Hey Gav thanks for the info

Maybe I will go to a three shop and check the phone out.

the only issue will be unlocking the phone as mum has had a severe stroke and can only use one hand, so if the unlock process is two handed then this is out of the question.

Otherwise this deal should suit the old dears well

cheers

it's a sequence of presse, to unlock, it's the top left button them the bottom left button, it has about a 3 second windo on it, so it's easily done one handed, but i don't know your mum's situation so i can't guarantee she'll be able to do it as easily. you'll see in store.

another critiism, the battery life is nothing special, charge every 2-3days depending on use, but if they're in a home this shouldn't be difficult

If you surf ordinary websites like this one on the skypephone, it runs out of memory. E-Bay ordinary website is the same.
Off key is a bit to quick to off the phone, specially if all you wanna do is discon a call.
Keypad is tiny and fiddly.
Screen scratches real easy.
Back slide off if not careful, only held on by magnet at bootom of phone. Have to sellotape the back that comes off to the back that stays on beside the camera.
Software does not sync with outlook calendar, have to export and import a separate vcard for every appointment.

i don't use mobile internet nor do i use the calendar, so i was unaware of these and so did not mention them

A word of warning

I purchased one of these and put my existing 3 contract (talk and text 600) sim in it thinking I could use the skype - but it says "not authorised"

I phoned 3 and they said I would need to purchase an add - on package at 5 quid a month.

Just a warning so no one else gets caught out.
