Any tips on how to speed up my web browser?

Redking Avatar

My web browsers - Firefox & Explorer - often slow down and won't load pages for ages.

Last night I was attempting to watch a film via Lovefilm and the webpage wouldn't even load let alone start buffering the video. I know its not my internet connection because my dads laptop works fine and so did my Xbox last night.

So any tips I can take to speed them up a bit

thanks

Xbox, Wii and other laptop seem to be fine.

We're with the largest Virgin broadband package so it should be pretty good

whatsThePoint

most noticeably last night, but it has happened on and off for a few weeks.

I'm just looking at my network and sharing centre and the signal for my internet connection is "poor". Resetting the router doesnt really make much of a difference

cable or wireless?

Have you tried Chrome? It's very quick.

wireless
#13
even when Im sitting right next to the router with my laptop the signal I get is only "fair", never good or great. Isnt that unusual seeing we're meant to be on the best broadband package
[mod]#14
Have you tried changing the channel on the router?
#15
The broadband package wouldn't make a difference to the quality of wifi reception you get from your router

Have you tried changing the channel on the router?

sorry Im not much of a techie, what would the benefits of this be? Would it affect all devices that try to connect it?
#17
whatsThePoint
update the firmware on the router

is this something that usually needs to be done? Because its never been done on the one we've got. How would I go about doing that?
#18
Use a network cable instead of wireless (just to test if it makes a difference)

Read the thread back after the comment about the scum.

I would go with this, theres likely another network close to yours (next door etc) on the same channel. can't find a wireless scanning program to see nearby networks theres one on my HTC desire.
#20
I would try network cable before you start updating router firmware

right, think I might do that then, couple of quid on a cable could save some serious messing about
#22
Is anything else connected wirelessly?

what router you got (VM supplied?) ?

Well belkin make absolute junk for a start.
And the internet speed has absolutely nothing to do with the wiseless speed.

well the speed test shows Im only getting around 3mb/s, which is well below what we're paying for

what router would you advise?
#31
I was gona ring them and kick off saying this is the speed im getting, I pay for 20mb/s what the **** is that about, but just read this on their website:

First a quick note about speed tester websites
Web-based speed testers have their place - they can be a quick way to check your broadband is running in tip-top condition, however there are reasons that may make their results inaccurate.

Most speed test sites are hosted on servers that are on different parts of the internet and it’s difficult to tell ‘how far’ that test has to travel to reach you. Virgin Media have no control over the quality of other provider's networks, so tests that travel onto other parts of the internet don’t always give accurate results on how your connection is performing. This means the test is merely measuring how fast data is able to travel from one part of the internet to another, not how fast the connection to your home actually is.

The accuracy of a speed test site will also be affected by the time of day you run the test and how busy the speed test server is. Connecting via wireless can also make a difference to the results. Please be aware of these limitations if you are relying on a speed test site to measure your speed.

I;m with VM and speedtest ALWAYS shows an accurate result (10mb)

I would call VM and complain (freephone 150)

Speedtests are never accurate anyone with half a brain will know that. Yes they are often right, but you could never use it as definate proof.

Also why would you ring Virgin when all the other devices are fine, and you've already admitted that your wireless sucks and you've not bothered to try it wired (which all ISPs will tell you to do).

I've just tried it wired and it wasnt much better. I said the Xbox was fine last night but I have had problems with that and the PS3 over the last couple of weeks. My dad only goes on ebay so he wouldnt even notice the difference probably!

Talk sense man! LOL at you saying it aint worth ringing VM cos other devices like an xbox work fine!

Nevermind, I'll let the clueless internet 'experts' talk. And yes if everything else is working fine then it is obvious the computer with the **** wireless connection is the problem.

you're the only one making out you're an expert but then post comments which make no sense whatsoever!

e.g. Speedtests are never accurate anyone with half a brain will know that. Yes they are often right

OP, check your service status and ring VM as it is most likely you have a VM problem (other 'experts' beg to differ cos your xbox seems to run ok, as does ebay on your dads lappy - how I lolled)

https://my.virginmedia.com/service-status/details;jsessionid=12AFFC29F33777E80D45DC5CA97816CA

try turning your cable modem off at the plug and unplugging the input co-ax cable from the modem. Wait a minute, re-connect it and then turn the power back on.

Works for me if I ever get a drop in speed on VM.

Its the first thing he techies at vm will tell you to do anyway

Yes they are often right, but they are not accurate enough to be taken seriously by any ISP. My 20 meg connection will test as 13 one day, then 35 the next. There is a reason why most ISPs host there own (BT and Talktalk both host them on their own networks).

VM dont control speedtest and my 10mb connection always shows as 10mb

/end
