Any ubuntu experts out there?

My lads just install ubuntu 9.1 on his system.

The installer said it could repartition and dual boot with XP, so that's what he's done.

The problem now is the system only boots to XP ? Should there be a 'which op system do you want to boot to?' screen ?
He's tried to reinstall ubuntu but it say it's already installed !

So, how the heck do you boot into it ???

It 'should' have installed the GRUB bootloader at installation. However, you can edit the Windows bootloader if you wish. Details here:

This is why I don't like dual booting, everytime I install a second OS something like this always happens to me!

While you are trying to fix this, you may find the FIXMBR function useful if you mess up your boot manager, some details are available here: http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/fix-mbr-xp-vista/ .

My advice is, tread carefully!

Is there more than one physical hard-drive in the machine?

PS Its Ubuntu 9.10 not 9.1 (the 10 corresponds to October - releases come out in April and October so the next one should be 10.4)

No, just one HD. I'm guessing that as XP was there first it's reduced C and created D where it's installed ubuntu.

He's in Cumbria and I'm in Bristol, so I'm trying to sort him out by phone and text!

hi been trying to remember a program that may help you, finally found it. The company that made it actually have another program which may help aswell

iReboot 1.1:http://neosmart.net/software.php
iReboot sits in your taskbar at startup (only taking up 400KB of memory!) and lets you choose which operating system you want to reboot into. more info on the site

so if you are sayin it is installed it on the system but select it at start up this this means to can select booting to it after booting in XP

EasyBCD 1.7.2http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1
if i remember correctly i used this program to remove the option of starting up in Ubuntu at start up, so it may do the reverse and allow you to create the option, u may have to fiddle around with it though, be careful as you don't want to mess anything up.

hope this helps
