Needing to get into shape, I like cycling and thought about getting back into it, ultimately leading to doing the coast to coast (finishing in sunderland)

Wondering if anyone has done it, or other similar things. Looking for a bit of advice re training. I haven't ridden for a while, so would perhaps need to build up to 30 mile stints

Thinking of camping so will also need to think about carrying weight

Any advice gratefully received

Am subscribing to this thread as looking to do one of the Women's Charity rides next year in Central America and need some advice re training oO !

Quick questions:
You do cycle on the roads (or cycle lanes/paths when available) and not the footpath? (If not you have to break that habit first)

How far did you use to cycle? (was it regularly, was it carrying weight in a bag or backpack)

What kind of bike do you have?

Is it a solo adventure or with other people?

I cycled on the roads, although I used to cycle at rutland water a lot

Only real distance I've done is rutland water (18 miles or so) not that often, 3-5 times per year. No weight carried (other than my considerable own :))

I have a giant boulder mountain bike, it is a few years old now, so may buy a new one if I can justify it and enjoy it regularly

Have a couple of people I hope to ask along, both fitter than me so I would need to do a fair bit of training before we started training together

My recommendations in the following order:

Get your bike serviced, go to a local bike shop and they will be able to tell you if everything is road legal and safe (gears, brakes, tyres, frame, etc).

After that practice, start off with 15 miles per day (less if unable to go that far initially) of a variety of locations. Wear suitable clothing that wicks sweat and a jacket that is waterproof.

After that practice with a light back pack (you can stuff it with anything) to get used to the added momentum and dimensions you will have (I recommend a crumpler backpack).

More on to the weight and size you would need (remember you will need to bring certain items such as bike pump, etc in addition to camping and living equipment).

Thanks, any recommendations for shoes? Don't want to spend a fortune, but want to be comfortable

done it twice (from whitehaven to Sunderland on both accounts) both times over 2.5days (travelled from home, sunderland at 8am each morning, and set off at around 11am, cycling til 7pm with 2 mini breaks and a slighty longer one on the first day)....

can send you loads of info and advice etc.. just let me know dates/etc, mite ride with you some/all of the way

you doing it for charity?

Disco that is very generous and very useful. For shoes I would recommend a pair of shoes you find comfortable, I personally wear the same shoes I run in and find that perfectly fine.

i just wore standard trainers, shorts and a vest although both times were in June and red hot temps. Where do you live OP?

Can recommend a few excellent BnBs if you didnt wanna camp it up! ;-) I also have 2 reports (storys) i wrote I can pass onto you - funny, but serious in all parts!

Bnbs might be an option, but I enjoy camping, so thought it would be a nice merge

Have seen there's some cycling stuff on offer at sports direct so might get a vest and shorts, I definitely need my bike serviced though, halfords a reasonable place to go?

sancho - if you have a local charity that could do with a few quid (anything helps), do it for charity,and you can contact local cycle shops for help / supplies

although, you might not wanna do it for charity, and thats fine, but I found we got loads of stuff given from spare tyres, puncture kits, to energy supplies and even bottled water

Peterborough to Whitehaven via WCML is do-able. You coud always cycle to Newcastle to finish then its straight on a train back to PB

I would definitely be up for doing it for a charity, I want to do it anyway so..... there are a few local ones I'll look into

whilst in the forces we did a charity coast to coast across hadrians wall ... ( we did it in legs rather than one person doing it all )

so your first day perhaps 30 miles to Keswick, and stay over there. Can recommend you an excellent BnB. I'd definatley ride the first day with you

The only training that I did, was to ride to work 2 or 3 times each week, 16 miles each way. The route is not as tough as it looks, the first real climb is Winlatter pass, then the climb up Hartside is a long slog but easier than it looks. The climb that I found hardest wasn't up the Rockhope incline(it's downhill from there onwards), but the steep climb out of Garrigill, it felt it would never end.

Couple of big climbs..

From Start to Finish... Winlatter, Hartside, Garrigil, Allenheads to Rookhope (is a medium climb), but the climb from Rookhope to Park Head Cafe (Waskerley) via offroad or up Crawleyside is a tough one.

However, you can avoid Garrigal by going via Alston, but its not much better. Just depends on where you are stopping on the 2nd / 3rd night.

if you work out a definate plan / time period I'll see how much of the ride I can do. Its a lovely 136mile venture, through some beautifuls parts of the UK, made even more enjoyable, as I live on the doorstep of the finish line.

No i am taking it at a more leiuserly pace, fancy having a good nose around rather than head down and go for it. Trying to do it in 13/14 days with the longest at about 22 miles. Just hope the weathers good lol.

thats a very good site mate - loads of tips, especially if you're camping. When it comes to BnBs I can recommend the best for where ever you stay, but for camping, that site should help you a lot.

I am getting my 2007 c2c map from me mate over the weekend (course hasnt changed!) so you're welcome to it for you want. In the meantime, I can send you some stuff to be looking at but need an email

I tried to keep to 10mph (or faster downhill), but my computer gave up after 3 or 4 miles. Took about an hour and a quarter.

Not thought about dates, after speaking to my friend he mentioned there's a ride from near where I live to Great Yarmouth, about 100 miles, but all flat!! Might do that this year and then leave the C2C until next.

Not sure though atm

I'm getting my c2c map (2007 version) back this week so you're more than welcome to have it and return after use (I like to reuse things you see)

would recommend the c2c this year (mainly coz I wanna ride the first day again to Keswick, but not on my own) lol

Sancho, the lad who borrowed my Map has went and lost it! they can be picked up for around £6 like, so less than I paid 4 years or so ago
